Just wondering if anyone might be able to help with this story for girls?

I think this may have appeared in the Bunty annual, maybe around early 90s. Short story where a girl is cycling home in the dark and is run over and killed but she doesn’t realise and thinks she just had a near miss - I think it might have been a lorry but could be wrong.

I remember that she goes past a new supermarket and is surprised because she thinks that just the other day it was still a building site. Then she goes home but a new family live there.

At the end she realises she was killed but I can’t remember how.

I seem to remember at the start she’d won an award. I’m sure I ‘adapted’ the idea of the story for an English lesson at school!

Not sure about that one but I had a similar one where it looked like the girl was a ghost, she was all grey and was watching a new family in her home, they found a hairclip of hers down a crack in the floorboard. Then something happened can't remember what but I remember a screaming picture, the ending turned out that she was in a coma and that was when she woke up. They all met and gave her back her hair clip.

Bbq1 · 04/12/2021 23:24

These both sound extremely dark stories for Bunty!

CouncilHousedAndViolentBaby · 04/12/2021 23:28

Omg these have actually spooked me🙈

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 04/12/2021 23:29

I remember a similar Bunty story where a family move into a new home haunted by the ghost of the girl who had lived there before them who had died tragically. The daughter of the new family likes reading about keep fit and other such modern things but the ghost girl liked Black Beauty (I think) and didn't approve of the new inhabitants. So spookiness occurred.

Can't remember how it was resolved.

Maybe there was a goth working at Bunty at the time of these 'ghost of girl who died in tragic circs' stories Grin

Oh maybe this is the one I remember!

The hairclip is definitely ringing a bell.

I believe I also know this story (the hair clip had a koala on it, right?), but I can't remember were I read it - very likely an old annual.

I remember one from a Bunty or Judy album where a girl wakes up in the middle of the night as she hears something. Looks out the window and sees children playing, goes to join them every night and eventually realises they are ghosts. She is then run over and killed and leads the next game that night.

There used to be some really creepy stories in those magazines! I remember one was a dark story about a girl called Serena who had a magical pendant.

I remember this story, it went round my school as a 'spooky tale' but I don't remember the origin.

CatNameChange101 · 05/12/2021 01:38

The one that still sticks with me is the one where a family end up staying in a ‘hotel’ and it’s weird and super old, no electricity etc. On the way back from their holiday they tried to find it to no avail. Local villager tells them of the house from 100 years ago.

Rough and probably wrong story. But there was a house, unknown time jump, and then the realisation. Way too spooky for me at 10.

Have a look on here and you may find it if you have a few hours to spare Grin

That’s so creepy!

I have no idea what that story was and it’s really annoying me! I think thr girl might have been called Alison but I loved a book called The Other Side at the same time and the main character in that was called Alison. So I might be confusing the two.

I don't recall the stories ,but they sound more like something that should have been in Misty ?

AtomicBlondeRose · 05/12/2021 08:15

The first one is a short story which I remember reading in an anthology of spooky kids stories - I’ll see if I can find it. But definitely from a book, bit a comic.

Clawdy · 05/12/2021 08:41

Ringing a bell with me too, but can't remember where I read it.

Backtodecemberagain · 05/12/2021 08:53

I never read Misty - not sure why. I’m almost positive it was Bunty.

I remember that one too, or at least a version of it.

Shedmistress · 05/12/2021 09:11

I converted quite early on to Kerrang, it was a much lighter tone.

SaltedCaramelHC · 05/12/2021 09:16

Bit of a long shot ,as the details don't completely match, but could it be 'Crossing Over' by Catherine Storr? (short story)

nanopdf.com/download/crossingover-littleover-community-school_pdf

Nothing about a building site or a hair clip, and she's not cycling home but walking a dog, but the idea of being dead and not realising it happens

MintyCedric · 05/12/2021 09:20

@JaneJeffer OMG that link is amazing.

Planning a chilled out day after having my booster next Sunday...I know what I'll be doing now!

EllieSattler · 05/12/2021 09:24

There was a story in Bunty about a house being taken over by evil ivy that invaded their nightmares or something. Put me off houses with ivy on them for life.

Backtodecemberagain · 05/12/2021 09:32

Ooh that was good … not the same one though.

Mangozesty · 05/12/2021 09:33

Not the one you're thinking of, but I remember a Goosebumps story where the girl had a dream she was in a fire, woke up and carried on with her life. But then realised her and her family had died in the fire. Pretty dark for a kids story!

MintyCedric · 05/12/2021 09:41

Does anyone recall a story where a girl stood under a rowan tree and said 'Rowan tree, rowan tree, shake your berries down on me' and something magical happened?

Or the Strawberry Hankerchief...something to do with a young actress playing Desdemina in a production of Othello?

There was one where someone had a vision of a bride to be in her wedding dress covered in blood but it turned out to be paint.

And another where someone's mum was really uptight and snobbish and it turned out that she'd out that she's had a baby boy who'd died after a kid from a rough area put a dirty dummy in his mouth and he caught an infection.

There was some seriously weird stuff I those magazines!
