Keeping cat off the Christmas tree.

It went up a few hours ago and the furry little fucker has had it down three time already.

It's a fake one (its crap. I hate it but that's another thread) We'll be getting our main tree next weekend.

How do I keep a one year old insanely deviant cat off of the Xmas tree?

According to Tiktok, you're supposed to chase them with it and then they'll leave it alone 🤷🏼‍♀️

Geepee71 · 04/12/2021 20:48

No help, but we're not bothering with a tree this year due to 6 mth old kitten.

Water spray has worked here! Took 2 days and 5 month old kitten hasn't been near it since.

Embrace the stand in a ring of satsumas..
Dcats hate the smell of orange!!

Cat was 9 weeks when he came to us last Christmas but he was so weeny and overwhelmed he didn't really fuss with the trees last year (trees were up when he came to us)

I'm tempted to pack the fake tree up but I can't be Christmas-tree-less as I have 3 young children.

Hang it from the ceiling.

Beamur · 04/12/2021 20:52

Ha ha ha
Don't put lights or breakable baubles on it. Take amusing photos.

thickthighs73 · 04/12/2021 20:55

Lol you can’t ! Cats do what the hell they like. I have the scars to prove it. Joking aside I found putting the tree up for a few days, undecorated, let them get it out of their system, climb it, knock it over you name it has worked well

We've got a six-foot Norwegian spruce being delivered tomorrow - this might be challenge.

I’m probably gonna eat my words now lol

I'd left it up for 24h. Maybe that wasn't long enough?

Hoping he has calmed down a bit by the time we get the main tree!!

You can’t wait until they get old and stop .

Theunamedcat · 04/12/2021 21:03

Some cats like satsumas and some like tinfoil

Q123R · 04/12/2021 21:04

Put the tree in a playpen.

Snowywintersundays123 · 04/12/2021 21:06

Ours keep chewy through the Christmas light wires, little feckers!!!

Aderyn21 · 04/12/2021 21:07

My cat likes both water and oranges, so neither deterrent works here.
I've stuck mine in a corner and just shoo them away - I bought a narrow, dainty one that they can't actually climb and I shut them out of the room if I go out otherwise they'd have it over.
But basically cats do what they want - kitten has taken to scaling the lamp for better access!

Crunchymum · 04/12/2021 21:07

@Q123R

Put the tree in a playpen.
I think my cat would laugh at me to be honest.

You need a weightier base. One that can support tree plus climbing cat.
Our tree went up today. Kids say DCs christmas present has arrived. She's not climbing it yet, but has been very interested. She climbed it several times a day last year, and slept in it the year before as a kitten....

Aquamarine1029 · 04/12/2021 21:11

I've always had multiple cats and have never had an issue with our trees because we secure it to the wall with a hook and fishing line. Works perfectly, no matter how determined they are to climb it. You can also anchor it using some rope/string and some heavy weights around the base.

Internetio · 04/12/2021 21:13

I have a pair of 3 month old kittens, put the tree up today, water sprayed when they went near. They’ve decided the sofa is a safer bet! I’ll be locking them out of the room when we go out just in case they get brave again!

Ours is currently sitting under it wondering what the heck it is? Grin
She is 7

MistyElla · 04/12/2021 21:14

We always get a blue spruce; they’re to spiky for the cats to want to climb !

Geepee71 · 04/12/2021 21:18

@internetio cute kittens

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 04/12/2021 21:18

We tape ours to either the coffee table or a weighted box. It hopefully works for toddlers too!
