Colin the caterpillar cake help!

Hoping someone can help me!

DS has a birthday between Xmas and NY and has requested a m&s Colin cake. It absolutely has to be M&S, either the Christmas version or the original.

I need to buy it but we live v rurally and it will be at least a 50 min drive to get one. I want to organise myself so I can go there and do other bits at the same time. Definitely don't want to drive there only to find out they won't last till his bday!

But I could do with knowing the shelf life of the cakes - do they last days or a few weeks? If anyone is passing an m&s would they mind checking for me today? I've tried calling our store but no answer.

So please would you lovely lot have a look for me if you happen to be in there?

Not as long as you think! I wanted a Halloween one, and had to wait until the Wednesday before Halloween (27th) before I got one with a decent enough date.

I think one week would probably be fine - we were eating our past the sell by date and it was fine.

Billybagpuss · 03/12/2021 09:55

We’ve had them regularly and they usually last a good week. Also you can get Ocado delivery for them, or last year I sent my dd a Colin gift set direct from m&s site but I think that just had the little cakes rather than the big one.

I looked at the Christmas ones yesterday (ds wants either Colin or Percy cake for XmasGrin) and the date on them was 13/12. So too early yet.

You could possibly freeze it?

@DownWhichOfLate

You could possibly freeze it?
Nope

Store in a cool, dry place, away from sunlight. Not suitable for freezing. Once opened, store in an airtight container.

Skysblue · 03/12/2021 10:17

You could do an Ocado delivery, they stock them (although my area is out of stock so this might fail).

Vesper8 · 03/12/2021 10:20

Hi OP, was in there yesterday and the BBD was 19.12.21. Hope that helps and your DS has a lovely birthday!

DrunkenKoala · 03/12/2021 10:46

You can pre-order this one to pick up. The website is already showing dates between Christmas and New Year.

We have recently had this cake twice. Both times the cakes were within sell by date but disappointingly dry 😣

MyDcAreMarvel · 03/12/2021 10:48

Colin freezes fine despite what the packaging says, be logical it’s just cake.

You monster, I hope you at least popped a little hat and scarf on him
Tigersteakpie · 03/12/2021 17:36

This is helpful thanks! I don't want to go out between Xmas and NY so that's out (I want to be sat eating cheese drinking wine). No deliveries available either.

It sounds like if I go on the 19th, we should be ok!!

Hooray! Thank you so much everyone!

I dont get the hype tbh. Much better cakes out there

pickingdaisies · 03/12/2021 17:56

Dementedpixie this is a child's request. Not masterchef.

I’ve never had a Colin cake that wasn't dry to be honest.

OP I’d say you were ok to home freeze - it might improve him Grin

@5thnonblonde You monster, I hope you at least popped a little hat and scarf on him better than under the patio Grin
