DD needs a laptop for her GCSE work, but I have no idea what to get or where to begin with deciding. So many laptops out there, and I have so little idea*, so can you recommend something reasonable which will last for a while without costing a fortune. She's been using an old desktop at home but it died, and I'd quite like my computer back in the evenings.

*I'm not a complete incompetent but have always used Apple and don't think she really needs a MacBook...

ask the school/teacher.
my dc school has a provider that you can either buy lease from.
they are sturdy lenovo think pads or chrome books I think.

A standard laptop is fine for gcse, do you already have a family computer no need for anything fancier!

The thing is, with Windows computers I have no idea what level a 'standard' laptop is. How much should we be paying.

Both DH and I worked from home before lockdown, so we each have a computer which we use all the time. DD had a handmedown from DH, but that has died.

My daughter used an iPad with an apple pen all the way through year 11 and now year 12.

I am a teacher and have seen all manor of laptops being used by the students. The best without a doubt is the Microsoft Surface pro. You can get second hand off ebay for reasonable price. They are ink-able (like an iPad) so with the pen, your dc can use it like a note pad, or connect on the keyboard and use as a laptop. iPads are nice but they don't work quite so well with all the different systems the kids have to use for school that are generally set up for PCs.
