Another Invisalign question (wisdom tooth)

Hi everyone, I have a question prompted by another Invisalign thread asking about getting the aligners with fillings, but didn't want to hijack the other poster's thread!

I had an initial consultation a few months ago and I've been really dithering about it. I have an impacted and partially erupted lower wisdom tooth that I think I should get dealt with. It very rarely causes any issues (in recent years, anyway - it's had a few flare-ups but that was several years ago), but would it be sensible to get this taken out before starting Invisalign?

The orthodontist said not, and I'd definitely rather not have to go to hospital for an operation, which I was told by my regular dentist that it would probably have to be. What do you think would be most sensible? Has anyone had a similar experience?

Thank you Smile

If the orthodontist says no that no you don't need to. An orthodontist is more qualified than a dentist

If your wisdom tooth causes problems and you want it out then fair enough, but it shouldn't really affect the invisalign.

I have the same issue with a grumbly wisdom tooth. It gets inflamed now and then, but not frequently enough to qualify for removal. I had invisalign fitted last week and the tooth did cause some problems at first. The gum around it swelled up, but this did settle down. I also find I have to fit the aligner to that tooth first, rather than starting with the front teeth (as per the dentists advice).

Thank you, both, that's really helpful!

I'm summoning the courage to phone and get booked in for the New Year... I've had two consultations and at some point I just need to get on with it and get started! 😄

Hope yours is going well so far, @CalliopeSings!

I’ve just commented on the other thread & then spotted this one 😅

If it were me, I would really consider getting the tooth out before you start Invisalign treatment. That way, the aligners can be used to pull your remaining back teeth into the gap & close the space.

You don’t want to spend all that money & end up getting your tooth extracted further down the line & having a gap or implant fitted.
