Xmas holiday and teens

Purpleturtle2021 · 01/12/2021 09:20

We have a holiday to Spain booked for Xmas, the latest government changes mean my 2 teens, who are single jabbed, can't enter Spain. My partner wants to leave my teens (from a previous relationship) with family members so he, myself and our 2 toddlers can still go to Spain. His argument is that he works hard outside, he hates the winter, getting away means alot to him (which I understand) also my teenagers spend all their time in their bedrooms and never speak to us. My argument is leaving them behind when they were supposed to be coming and spending Xmas day without them. I've already said I can't leave them behind so we either spend Xmas at home, not talking to each other and being miserable or I leave my 2 teenagers with family so I can spend Xmas in Spain making my partner happy but myself and 2 teenagers unhappy. I just don't know what to do.

Can you go somewhere else that will let the teens in? France and Portugal seem ok with regular testing.
No way would I leave my teens behind but I wouldn't abandon the idea of a holiday without looking into alternatives.

perenniallymessy · 01/12/2021 10:10

I think the best option would be to change your holiday to somewhere the teens can go.

The government haven't thought about families at all through this. My 12yo had his vaccination in October, so won't be able to have his second until after Christmas. Even when he gets the second jab he can't get a pass as it currently stands. We really want to book next year's holiday but it just feels like too much of a risk at the moment.

Thank you, there's not enough time between their first vaccine for them to get their second vaccine before Xmas.

I've suggested we cut the holiday short, change destination or change it to a later date but it turns into an argument 😬

In the summer we holiday in a motohome, my 2 teens don't like it anymore and stay with relatives, they prefer that, they spend the summer outside with friends but the winter and Xmas is different, they always come on a flying, beach holiday at Xmas, I know they're going to be disappointed. I've already decided I'm not spending Xmas day without them, even if I only see them for a few hours.

I needed to hear other people's opinions, they are a great help.

@peterpointerpickedapeck

How old are your teens? If they're under 18 they take the vaccine status of their parents.
Where did you get that from?
Returnoftheowl · 01/12/2021 10:39

Definitely don't leave your teens behind... That clearly shows them that your partner and 2 toddlers are more important then them, which sounds like a path to resentment.

SavageBeauty73 · 01/12/2021 10:39

I couldn't leave my teens behind at Christmas. Your DH is a dick for suggesting it.

No they really don't
candycane222 · 01/12/2021 10:51

Booking any foreign trips has been a risk this year - for exactly this kind of reason. Is it possible to cancel and rebook eg at Feb half term? If your dh is refusing to consider this then I have to say he is acting a bit petulant and spoiled.

Teens generally get a pfizer vaccination. There is a 21 day period between vaccinations, NOT 12 weeks.

A bit shocked at how slow the UK has been on this! My teens have been double vaxxed for nearly 2 months (I thought Australua was way behind the UK).

GADDay · 01/12/2021 10:55

Not true.

BarefootHippieChick · 01/12/2021 10:55

The UK has been ridiculously slow at vaccinating teens, and even with Pfizer it has to be 3 months before they'll be allowed a second dose.

trumpisagit · 01/12/2021 11:08

This is because the JCVI recommendation is about reducing the chances of heart inflammation.
That should be our priority over travel.

getsanta · 01/12/2021 11:49

In my opinion, this isn't even on. You can't all swan off on holiday and leave two of your kids! What message is that to them. Nothin but that the new family's happiness is more important than theirs. They will never forget it.

Thing is, in the Uk they spaced the vaccines out much more to enable mass vaccination faster. And it worked- and has been proven to increase immunity.
Hoppinggreen · 01/12/2021 12:02

He’s awful for even suggesting it

DSGR · 01/12/2021 12:05

No you can’t leave your teens at home. It tells them you don’t care about them. Your DH shouldn’t be putting you in this position.
Move the holiday to somewhere everyone can go

Skiptheheartsandflowers · 01/12/2021 12:06

@getsanta

I'm sorry, but I can't believe this is even a question. You would seriously consider leaving your teens on Christmas? I would be getting rid of any DP who even suggested I do something like that. He sounds terrible.

No they don't. How bizarre
Oblomov21 · 01/12/2021 12:35

How long is it between teen vaccinations please?

some people saying 3 months above, some saying 21 days.

which is it please?

CarButtonCloth · 01/12/2021 12:35

I'd look into other possible holiday options but there's no way I would go away without my teens at Christmas. It could cause them massive resentment.

JCVI are recommending 3 months to reduce the risk of heart complications but it isn't possible to book the second jabs yet.

My 16 year old daughter's nhs letter that has come today to book her second states 12 weeks for her age group, or 8 weeks if over 18. There's no mention of 21 days in it at all.

I've attached the relevant bit. It's an nhs letter.

Comefromaway · 01/12/2021 12:47

Hell would freeze over before I left them behind.

Ds just recovered from covid so his 2nd vaccination has now had to be delayed!

rookiemere · 01/12/2021 13:03

I wouldn't leave them either and can't believe your H is suggesting that you do.
However I suspect that by Christmas nobody is going to be traveling to Spain, so it's likely a moot argument. At this point I would not he traveling abroad in case you get stuck over there or have to do 10 days isolation when you return.

poshme · 01/12/2021 13:47

@Oblomov21 the person saying 21 days was in Australia
