Just thought this might be a nice thread.

My dc (7) and I are currently reading The Worst Witch. Afterwards dc is looking forward to us reading The Bolds in Trouble by Julian Clary.

I have also started to read Goodnight Mister Tom, by myself, following a recommendation on another thread.

So, just out of interest - What are you reading with your dcs? Smile

I’m reading the Folk of the Faraway tree to my nearly 6 year old. I adored it as a kid and he loves it too. Old fashioned but the stories are so imaginative

Aslockton · 30/11/2021 21:06

The Sophie Stories by Dick King Smith (6 year old)

The Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis (11 year old)...it is a child's version of a story similar to A Thousand Splendid Suns.

Goodnight Mr Tom is a brilliant book. It has me blubbing every time.

PinkyU · 30/11/2021 21:10

Grandpa’s great escape by David Walliams with my almost 9 year old.

The boy with the butterfly mind by Victoria Williamson with my almost 12 year old.

My 21 year old and I are both reading Nest by Terry Goodkind together, she on her e-reader me on paper.

DD is 14 and we are reading Thank You Jeeves. She is very amused!

badlydrawnbear · 30/11/2021 22:24

James and the Giant Peach. We are going to see it at the theatre on Christmas Eve so I need to get through at least one chapter a day.

35andThriving · 01/12/2021 08:49

badlydrawnbear, I bet James and the Giant Peach will be a brilliant show!

What age do you make the switch from picture books to longer books? My 4 year old seems to have outgrown a lot of favourites lately (Hairy McClairy, Julia Donaldson etc) should I be moving them on do you think?

toomanyhobbies · 01/12/2021 09:34

Ds (7) are reading the wishing chair by EB I loved it as a kid we have already read the far away free books

Pegasussnail · 01/12/2021 09:37

Try something different. If they don't like it, swap back. I don't think there's an age where that'll happen just when they want to move on iyswim
afrikat · 01/12/2021 09:39

We finished all the Faraway Tree and Wishing Chair books. Now reading Matilda. DS 8 and DD 5

Pegasussnail · 01/12/2021 09:40

Enid Blyton

vampirethriller · 01/12/2021 09:43

3 year old loves the old Fern Hollow books and Paddington but I don't think she follows much of Paddington, she just likes it because it's him!

Pegasussnail · 01/12/2021 09:43

ilikecheese
You could start with the Enormous Crocodile as it's short but has lovely illustrations.
At 4 mine enjoyed old fashioned fairy tales eg rumplestiltskin

35andThriving · 01/12/2021 09:45

You could try and read longer stuff if your 4 year old seems ready, Ilikecheeseontoast. Ds used to like Mr Men books at that age and the Jamie and Angus books by Anne Fine. I tried him with Teddy Robinson too but he never quite took to him. I never stopped the picture books though.

Thanks for replying everyone.

boy11 just raced through all the Island of Fog series. Now rereading Rick Riordan's again. Can't keep up with him, even with Kindle Unlimited (suggestions please?!)

daughter12 is into Karen McManus (One of us is lying) now reading The Cousiins.

daughter8 is reading the Secret Garden for school and stuff like Captain Underpants, Dermot O Leary, 13+ storey tree house series for fun.

Skysblue · 01/12/2021 09:46

Age 9. How to Train Your Dragon! And also, Harry Potter (somewhat edited as I read, to make less scary).

foxgoosefinch · 01/12/2021 09:49

DD has recently finished the Harry Potter series and is feeling bereft, so I started her on some Diana Wynne Jones. But she’s taking a quick break to read Hetty Feather’s Christmas which she got for an advent gift.

I think I may read her some Laura Ingalls Wilder next for the Christmas chapters in Little House; plus The Wolves of Willoughby Chase which is a good Christmas read!

My own favourite Christmas books were The Box of Delights, The Dark is Rising and the Innsbruck chapters of Jo of the Chalet School, but I think DD won’t quite be into those yet - maybe next year.

Glitterandunicorns · 01/12/2021 09:53

My five and a half year old son has just finished the Enid Blyton faraway tree for approximately the billionth time. He loves them and so did I at his age! We're going to try the Wishing Chair series next.
