Just thought this might be a nice thread.

My dc (7) and I are currently reading The Worst Witch. Afterwards dc is looking forward to us reading The Bolds in Trouble by Julian Clary.

I have also started to read Goodnight Mister Tom, by myself, following a recommendation on another thread.

So, just out of interest - What are you reading with your dcs? Smile

Tom Fletcher's Danger Gang - thoroughly enjoyed it!

CoodleMoodle · 26/07/2022 21:53

We've just finished all of the Secret Seven with DD(8). We did the Famous Five last year. Just finished another David Baddiel book which she enjoyed. Next we're doing the fifth Harry Potter book, hoping to be finished by Sept as they do reading quizzes at school and she wants to be a Word Millionaire (again), so that'll give her a big wordcount boost. On her own she's reading Wimpy Kid and/or Jeremy Strong, even though they're both too easy for her really.

DS(4) is currently into anything about dinosaurs or cars. We found some Hot Wheels themed books on Amazon Kids+ and he adores them. They're a bit tedious but anything to keep him interested in reading!

We gave DS2(9) the Roald Dahl collection for his birthday a couple of weeks ago and are currently reading a few chapters of Fantastic Mr Fox every evening. DH and I are feeling very nostalgic.

DS is reading The Time Traveling Caveman by Terry Pratchett on his own. I haven't had a proper look at it but he seems to be enjoying it.

bluesky45 · 26/07/2022 22:50

The enchanted wood series here with DS (4). He gets 1 chapter each night. He's listened to the audio book endlessly. DS (3) listens too but he picks a picture book for his bedtime story, hugless Douglas was tonight's pick.
DS1 wants to finish the enchanted wood so we can start jack's secret summer, which we picked up when camping from the site gift shop as he had chicken pox and couldn't go swimming etc but we never quite got round to it!

Need to go through this thread and note them all down!

Reading The Owl Service (Alan Garner) with DD age 9. Apparently it’s too scary for her to read alone in the evenings.

Malory Towers with DD 7. Not helping with her boarding school obsession Hmm.

ladygindiva · 26/07/2022 23:13

Sorry if already mentioned has haven't rtft but am currently reading the princess disgrace series, dd loves them. If you like worst witch, these are similar but in a unicorn / princess vein. I think they're great, highly recommend.

DS2 (2.5) likes to be read all of the Julia Donaldson books every night! Luckily DS1 (6) can read them to him once I get too sleepy!

DS2 (6) likes being read "the book with no pictures" or when I make him up a story (I usually turn our family into a family of squirrels that go steal picnics)

Namechange26722 · 26/07/2022 23:29

The final part of When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit trilogy with dd1 (11)
Ballet Shoes with dd2 (7)

Toosadtocomprehend · 26/07/2022 23:30

Julia Donaldson books for 2,5 year old !! Not planning on changing them yet !

Smileatthesmallthings · 26/07/2022 23:43

Ooh following with interest for my 5.5yo. We have read all the Mr Men many times, more picture books than I can possibly count, the enchanted wood series 3 times in a row - he now just picks his favourite lands to read and he has all of the Winnie the Pooh stories on repeat on his Yoto player. He absolutely loved it when I read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory but I find some Roald Dahl a bit too dark for his age so am wondering what to go for next.

AppleHa · 26/07/2022 23:53

12 year old DS and I are working our way through all the Wolves of Willoughby Chase books although we did it in a weird order - WoWC ages ago, then more recently The Stolen Lake (the best one imho), Limbo Lodge, The Cuckoo Tree, then backwards to Night Birds on Nantucket, backwards again to Black Hearts in Battersea, jumping forwards to Dido and Pa, and now we are on Is Underground. I had only read WoWC, BHiB, NoN, and The Stolen Lake as a child so I am enjoying this very much.

FiddleFigs · 26/07/2022 23:55

DD8 - currently reading Ronja The Robber’s Daughter (Astrid Lindgren), which we’re both really enjoying. We also have the Ramona books on the go (Beverly Cleary), which DD loves and I find slightly tedious.

Quornflakegirl · 27/07/2022 09:33

Just adding one my girls loved, a graphic novel called El Deafo, so good!

Landofthesummerpeople · 27/07/2022 09:42

Currently reading You’re A Bad Man Mr Gum with my DD 6. She also loves the Horrid Henry books at the moment.

35andThriving · 27/07/2022 11:55

Thanks, everyone.

It's lovely to hear what everyone's reading Flowers

We’re currently reading the Narnia chronicles (kids are 9 and 11.5), I’m wondering if His Dark Materials could be a suitable next step, but also have my sights on The Hobbit.

Kids are devouring library books this summer - Asterix, Warrior Cats, Wings of Fire (also on audible), Beano….

DS read and loved The Bromeliad trilogy, so have noted the other Pratchetts in this thread.

We read The Wee Free Men about 4 times!

35andThriving · 27/07/2022 15:44

I read The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe recently.

I found it all a bit strange. I thought it seemed to have sexual undertones when the girls were riding on Aslan's back. Also, the death of The Witch hardly got a mention, whereas the author seemed to fixate on describing a giant with a handkerchief. Strange vibe. It seems to be loved by a lot of people.

I'm reading the final Harry Potter to DS1(7). DS2 (4) reads a different book each night, but current favourites are Everybody Cooks Rice, The Legend of Rock Paper and Scissors and various Paddington stories.

Thornethorn · 27/07/2022 15:57

The Last Bear, A Little Princess, The something who fell into a fairytale, Skylarks, a series of unfortunate events, the treasure seekers.

We read!

Thornethorn · 27/07/2022 15:58

I don't recognize your reading of the lion the witch and the wardrobe at all. No sexual vibes that I saw.

You might enjoy the hatmakers.

Favouritefruits · 27/07/2022 16:07

Famous 5, Treasure island, I’m half way through reading it to my 8 year old before bed, I think I’m enjoying it more than him! My four year old likes ‘When Robert went to playgroup’ it’s his first chapter book without pictures but so far it’s holding his interest.

MarthaMayWhovier · 27/07/2022 16:18

My 2yo son's current favourites are the Meg and Mog books, Thomas The Tank Engine and Chuggington stories.

MarthaMayWhovier · 27/07/2022 16:19

Crikey, I'm going to have to reread The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.
