Just thought this might be a nice thread.

My dc (7) and I are currently reading The Worst Witch. Afterwards dc is looking forward to us reading The Bolds in Trouble by Julian Clary.

I have also started to read Goodnight Mister Tom, by myself, following a recommendation on another thread.

So, just out of interest - What are you reading with your dcs? Smile

I just started reading all 3 dc the Christmas Pig by JKR today. My plan was to read them a bit everyday until Christmas but we’re already 1/4 of the way through, it’s very good!

For bedtime stories I’m reading Opal Plumstead by Jaqueline Wilson to my 5 year old and The 1000 Year Old Boy by Ross Welford to my 11 year old.

Beachbreak2411 · 01/12/2021 14:28

“The Runaways” by Jaqueline Wilson.

Seainasive · 01/12/2021 14:30

Red Rising to DS13. Amazed that he still lets me!

DD 5 is loving Winnie the witch books, Percy park keeper and anything based on the classic fairy tales

Dd2 is still very much in Julia Donaldson territory but also has a lovely Rosie and Jim book she loves written in 1995 (brand new in charity shop find) and quite likes the little miss books

Thanks everybody for all these responses.

Such a great thread! Smile

I definitely want to read The Boy in Striped Pyjamas, Tal45. Thanks for the suggestion.

Ilikecheeseontoast - A trip to the library has reminded me of a book - Polly and the Puffin by Jenny Colgan is lovely for moving on to slightly longer stories. The illustrations are all in black, white and orange.

I have moved on and am now reading Beswitched (to myself, not to my 7 year old). I do like reading kids' books. I find it sort of comforting. It is a lovely book, that doesn't get mentioned much on Mumsnet. It has a similar vibe to Charlotte Sometimes. I just thought I'd let others know about it in case anyone was looking for suggestions. It's by Kate Saunders.

The Wind in the Willows. Or if it's a late night & they are too tired for story, they love a few poems, currently from Imaginary Menagerie by Roger McGough.

DS7 is working his way through the World's Worst Children/Teacher books & has a Tom Gates lined up. DS10 also Tom Gates. Ds13 Adam Kay's Marvellous Medicine.

I work in libraries & we have just pruned our shelves, so I got lots of new-to-us books for them to work on Grin Favourite perk of the job!

We are just about to start reading some of my favourites. The famous 5 series first of all. The books were passed to me from older cousin and are very delicate so really looking forward to handling them. After that we will read the wishing chair. I'm so excited to share my favourites with my children.

35andThriving · 21/12/2021 23:30

I've got Famous Five lined up to read to ds.

Mine are 11 & 13 and still like me to read to them....we're reading The Greek who Stole Christmas (from the Diamond Brothers mystery series) by Anthony Horowitz.
I think over the years the biggest successes have been the Faraway Tree series and the Wishing Chair series, both EB. The DCs were fascinated by them and all the possibilities of travelling to magical lands

OKScarpetta · 21/12/2021 23:36

I’m reading the Secret Garden to DD6. She’s enjoying it, as am I. We watched the film first, and she wanted to try the book.

I’ve got a huge pile of ‘next’ but probably Malory Towers.

specialmintapplecranberrysauce · 21/12/2021 23:43

DS12 Mrs Frisby and the rats of NIMH. We're also re-reading Winnie the Pooh and chatting about the philosophy in it a little - how our friends may all have different outlooks on life etc. I love that we can talk more about stuff like this as he grows up

montymole · 21/12/2021 23:51

Just started the BFG 😊

TheYearOfSmallThings · 21/12/2021 23:55

Tonight I read DS(6) "Brian the smelly bear smells something smelly".

stayathomer · 21/12/2021 23:57

Tonight read The night before the night before Christmas. Kids loved it! Also we read a small amt of Harry Potter every night. I love it as much as they do! Also got Julia Donaldson's The Christmas Pine from the library today but haven't got to it yet

Myadhdusername · 22/12/2021 00:03

We started The Christmas Pig a couple of nights ago. Had ordered it at the end of November to start on the 1st but thanks to RM it only arrived at the weekend so we’re on 5 chapters (thankfully short ones) a night to try and get through as much of it as possible before Christmas.

BogRollBOGOF · 22/12/2021 00:12

Stephen Fry is reading The Order of the Phoenix to DS2. By the time I'd read through the first four books since the start of the summer holidays, I was ready to delegate Grin

Earlier in the year I read the first 3 Hitchhikers books to DS1. Worth reading myself as at 10, some little details needed editing like the full descruption of Ecentrica Gallumbits... I didn't fancy explaining the tripple-breasted whore bit Grin

Bsmirched · 22/12/2021 00:32

My 7 year old and I have loved The Boy Who Grew Dragons series of books. Fabulous stories with real heart. We've finished A Boy Called Christmas tonight. Might have to nip out and get The Christmas Pig tomorrow!

Goneback2school · 22/12/2021 00:48

I'm also reading The Christmas Pig to DS8 and Dd6. We should have it finished by Christmas. Ds has just finished and is loving book 2 of the Nevermoor trilogy. Dd read The Ladybird classic The Magic Porridge Pot tonight.

35andThriving · 22/12/2021 19:18

I've heard lots of people say good things about The Christmas Pig.

Confusedofengland, that must be brilliant getting all the library's old stock. I would love that! Smile

The graveyard book (Neil Gaiman) with my 9 year old

IJemimaDigging · 31/12/2021 21:36

I am now currently reading The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark.

35andThriving · 26/07/2022 21:39

Just thought I would revive this thread for the summer holidays.

Ds is now 8, and we are reading an Usborne Alice in Wonderland Graphic Novel by Russell Punter and Simona Bursi.

What's everybody else reading?
