Is there an easy way for DH to track my location in a remote area?

We've recently moved house and I'm going to explore the local area tomorrow on my horse. It's very rural, lots of bridleways and forests and I don't know my way around yet. My horse is generally well behaved but is a bit nervous after the move and I'm worried that if I have an accident no one will know where I am.

Is there an app or some way that I can use Google maps to share my location in real time with DH so he can see where I am if something were to happen? He doesn't have WhatsApp.

For emergencies use what3words app

Stuckandinamess · 30/11/2021 20:08

Would he be willing to download WhatsApp? It is really easy to share your location and it is accurate.

Have fun exploring!

Find my iPhone if that’s what you have. Don’t know if other phones have anything similar

Sauvignonandlemonade · 30/11/2021 20:09

Perhaps the Hollie Guard app?

Starcaller · 30/11/2021 20:10

You can share with Google Maps, yes. There's an option in the app.

Playdoughcaterpillar · 30/11/2021 20:11

I have life 360 app. Works on android and iPhone and you can create a family group so you can all see where the others are. But I live in London. You need to have reception for it to work, not sure how it would be rurally.

Aposterhasnoname · 30/11/2021 20:11

Life 360. Even shows what speed you’re moving at.

gamerchick · 30/11/2021 20:11

Life360 ? Me and husband use that one, it's pretty good.

Starcaller · 30/11/2021 20:12

If you're in Google Maps app, press your initials/pic in top corner and select location sharing. You can then choose who to share with and for how long, and they'll see your location on their own Google Maps.

OddBoots · 30/11/2021 20:12

I just location share within google maps itself. Click on your own pic or whatever you have in on the right side of the search bar in maps and location sharing is one of the options.

OldWivesTale · 30/11/2021 20:12

Life 360. I could even see my DD traversing the ski slopes on it.

Thecatisboss · 30/11/2021 20:14

DH and I use Glympse app so he can track me when I'm out running by myself.

JaffavsCookie · 30/11/2021 20:16

I think the Harry Hall riding app has this function on it.
Or just don’t fall off

FrownsAndDimples · 30/11/2021 20:17

Easiest without having to download much else is location sharing on Google maps I think. Assume you already have that since you mention it.

LtGreggs · 30/11/2021 20:17

If you do this kind of thing regularly, you could consider a GPS beacon service. I go trail running on my own - I subscribe to Strava partly because I can share a beacon link by text which gives a live update on where I am, and last known location. I think you can get similar from Garmin and I'm sure others. I send my beacon link to DH (for emergency) and teen DC (who want to know when I'll be back for food/questions/taxi reasons).

I discovered recently that mine also sends an emergency text if I have a sudden deceleration :-) At the time I had merely tripped over in a muddy puddle and turned off the alert, but it would be useful if I had a proper accident.

Blooeyes · 30/11/2021 21:15

Thank you all so much, some great suggestions here. I do have what3words but worry about getting knocked unconscious or somehow unable to use my phone.

For now I'll just use Google maps but will look into the other apps as well.

Thank you!

My husband tracks my runs/walks using Strava.

HelloDulling · 30/11/2021 21:20

We have Life360, started using it when DH got into cycling, so I could find him in the middle of the Welsh mountains if I needed to. So far, I’ve used it once to rescue him with a flat tyre, he wasn’t far from home, but I would have struggled to locate him without it.

cloudtree · 30/11/2021 21:21

We just use find my phone on iPhones. The whole family have it switched on

ANameChangeAgain · 30/11/2021 21:23

Another vote for Life360. We use it a lot. It isn't pin point accurate in rural locations, but its close enough.

slothbyday · 30/11/2021 21:26

Another vote for Life360 - it's like a marauders map, you can see how fast they are going and when last moved etc so useful to establish what's going on.

RainingYetAgain · 30/11/2021 21:27

We use Strava for cycling and walking.

230pm · 30/11/2021 21:27

Life360 app and what3words x

ADialgaAteMyDog · 30/11/2021 21:28

We use Google maps location sharing for bike rides

coogee · 30/11/2021 21:35

In my experience, sharing a location on Google maps is extremely inaccurate. As in miles out, not yards. I certainly wouldn’t rely on it to be found quickly if I was unconscious.
