Stupid question re notice period

donkeyhottie · 30/11/2021 20:03

I'm handing in my notice tomorrow and I have a one month notice period. Is my last day 31st December or 1st January?? Thanks!

I’d say 28 days ?

MrsFin · 30/11/2021 20:10

1st Jan is a Saturday, so 31/12.
Or do you work Saturdays?

FTMbg · 30/11/2021 20:13

I would say 31st, but make it clear in your notice letter.

My contract says "one month". I don't work Saturdays but if it's about the expiration of "one month", does that matter? It's not necessarily my last day in the office, but my last day as a contracted employee?

If you are entitled to paid bank holidays then I would put your last day as 3 Jan. It won't change your last day you go to work but will give you some extra pay.

This.

You can choose either day. You cannot however choose the 3rd! (unless you give notice later).

Asiama · 30/11/2021 21:30

@underneaththeash why couldn't she put the 3rd? Notice is the minimum amount of time you have to give the employer, there's nothing to say you can't give more notice than what's contractually required.

MrsFin · 01/12/2021 10:22

I agree. You can give as much notice as you like, as long as you give a minimum of one month. Does your contract specify calendar month, or business days month.

I would say in my resignation letter that I intend on leaving current employment from COB on xx date, and leave it at that. It's a moot point though, if you're not getting paid for working the weekend, and the Monday is a BH.

Apart from 3/4 Februarys, you’re wrong.
