Britbox- is it all shit?

I’ve had a Britbox subscription thrown in with my broadband and frankly, I can see why they’re giving it away for free. The content is SHOCKING. Hi De Hi? Old episodes of Eastenders? Sitcoms I have literally never heard of with Judi Dench in from 1976?!

Please someone tell me that there is something watchable on here. So far I’ve had The Thick of It on (which I’ve seen a billion times, although it is marvellous) and Father Ted (which is on All4 anyway, albeit with adverts and which I’ve also seen many times). There must be something on here that I’ve not seen or is actually good (or both).

Anyone?

I love Britbox Blush midsummer murders, poirot, miss marple, the thin blue line, the new statesman, some great old hammer horrors …

But I like old stuff and don’t mind repeats

I did see The New Statesman on there, which I’ve never watched. And I do love Yes, Minister. I think generally it might just not be my style of telly though.

I bought a trial subscription just for Our Friends in the North . Brilliant stuff- looks a bit dated now (from the 90s) but an amazing series with great performances from Daniel Craig and Christopher Ecclestone etc... Well worth a watch. Also Unforgotten is great.

Grange Hill is on there, or at least some of it. We’ve enjoyed watching that.

There was an announcement that they would be showing Brookside but it turned out that there are only had eight episodes available on there.

Last Tango In Halifax is on there which I love.

Fatgalslim · 30/11/2021 19:14

Love it, watched some cracking stuff on there including

Red Riding Trilogy
Shetland
Crime
Manhunt
Professor T
Confession

Doesn't it have the original Dr Who's?

EvilRingahBitch · 30/11/2021 20:26

Yes it's got all the original series of Doctor Who, also all of Sapphire and Steel and The Prisoner.

There's some not bad theatre and opera as well as I recall and some rare nostalgic gems but you have to dig around to find the stuff that's to your taste - one viewer's nostalgic gem is another viewer's bafflingly dated and borderline offensive rubbish.

There are two complete series of Strictly Come Dancing (2018 and 2019 IIRC) which are not available anywhere else.

The thing that's on there which I Iove most and would be unable to replace is Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, but I already have the DVD which is why I didn't extend my subscription when my 6 month free trial was up.

Whitefire · 30/11/2021 20:40

I have just bought a Roku streaming device (so I can watch Disney+ on the 2nd TV) and they are offering a 28 day free trial.

DH might like the idea of Grange Hill.
