And erm well obviously that's awful.

But this and that and etc.

I assume if society collapsed here, or widespread poverty children hungry, no jobs, war, persecution of your group, any of that sort of thing.

Then absolutely no way would try to get out. Not likely to happen here though.

I agree that immigration is a massive situation but it's all over the place.

And think of eg Bangladesh. Hardly rolling in cash to start with. Up to one million in refugee camps who have fled Burma. Nearly ONE MILLION.

this is a global issue and a really hard one to get to grips with.

Big picture surely.

And of course when Brits go and live overseas we emigrate. Totally different. That's what 300,000 or something in Spain? From what i remember overall not contributing much will check.

CheeseMmmm · 01/12/2021 21:54

'Research has shown that most of the British population in Spain is poorly socially integrated into Spanish society.[6][7][8] A survey of 340 British migrants in the Province of Málaga, for example, found that one third rarely or never met Spanish people, apart from in shops and restaurants, and that 60 per cent did not speak Spanish well'

'Figures published in January 2015 showed that 2,973 British nationals were in receipt of unemployment benefits in Spain, paid by the host country.'

That's different though. Obviously.

CheeseMmmm · 01/12/2021 21:57

Screwed over.

'British expats in Spain have warned 'we are being screwed over' as they abandon the Costa del Sol due to Brexit.

Fuming pensioners say they have no choice but to move, due to more stringent immigration rules brought in after the UK left the European Union.'

So there you go.

CheeseMmmm · 01/12/2021 22:00

Sorry for sidetrack but fuck me. One rule for us and another for 'them'.

Best I heard was a man from South Africa who had moved to UK about 8 years previously.

In the pub one time he delivered an extended monologue about immigration to UK!

He was DH of friend so kept gob shut. But FFS!

Clymene · 01/12/2021 22:10

The impact on the local area where migrants wash up is pretty much zero actually @TractorAndHeadphones. It's just a racist myth.

twilightermummy · 01/12/2021 22:12

Fucking disgusting

EmpressCixi · 01/12/2021 22:27

@Clymene

The impact on the local area where migrants wash up is pretty much zero actually *@TractorAndHeadphones*. It's just a racist myth.
Not sure what you mean. The impact is never local. But it is still there.

Bodies washing up is tragic loss of life
Live refugees arriving are instantly apprehended and put in prison like detention centres.

We can’t rescue everyone if thousands keep crossing as they are. It’s hundreds of boats trying to cross from random beaches in France every day. And it’s more than doubled compared to last year. We are already at the point where lifeboats and other ships are facing choice, do they rescue boat A or boat B? Can’t save both.

So we absolutely should be trying to stop boats from leaving France in the first place. We absolutely should be using Interpol to arrest these human traffickers that are preying on vulnerable refugees. Should have a full scale humanitarian operation in France where they can just walk in and apply for asylum without having to risk their lives.

CheeseMmmm · 01/12/2021 22:29

So we're should be working with the rest of Europe and especially France to try to find a way through all this.

I agree.

CheeseMmmm · 01/12/2021 22:32

Oh sorry missed last bit.

It's France fault and they should do everything to sort it out. Pay for it. Somehow force people to stay in France if they are determined to get to UK.

When you say 'we' should be doing everything to stop boats leaving France, what specifically is your plan for doing that?

Clymene · 01/12/2021 22:34

I was responding to @TractorAndHeadphones post where she talked about the impact on the local area @EmpressCixi. The post she admired talked about people not being able to get GP appointments and quotas at schools. They're racist tropes.

I do agree that we need to stop them crossing in the first place.

The U.K. government refuses to process asylum applications in France, despite repeated invitations. As long as that continues, people will continue making the desperate journey.

MrsSkylerWhite · 01/12/2021 22:38

With France publicly backing away I can see people want to take matters into their own hands.“”

So basically you’re sanctioning murder?

MadTilda · 01/12/2021 22:49

@Kendodd

OK, I'm invoking Godwin here but now I realise how people stood by and let the holocaust happen.

They didn't just stand by, they supported it and enthusiastically voted for the people who delivered it. And the people who voted the Nazi's into power were just perfectly ordinary people just like us. They probably made very nice neighbours, went to work, loved there kids, would feed your cat for you while you were away. They weren't monsters, they just didn't like 'outsiders' taking up resources like GP appointments or school places. Never forget that, they were just like us.

Beautifully put. Thank you.
Itinerary · 01/12/2021 22:50

would you be less dubious if the daily mail reported it ? pro tory, leave supporting

Oddly, the Daily Mail was pro-remain.

CheeseMmmm · 01/12/2021 22:55

'I do agree that we need to stop them crossing in the first place.'

Who is this we, and how do you think 'we' should stop them?

Skysblue · 01/12/2021 22:56

Wow.

Britain is so much worse than it used to be.

Trying to stop lifeboats. Just wow.

Clymene · 01/12/2021 22:57

@CheeseMmmm

'I do agree that we need to stop them crossing in the first place.'

Who is this we, and how do you think 'we' should stop them?

The French and British governments by working together. The British government refuses to engage with France. As per the next line in my previous post - if we set up asylum processing in France, trafficking would reduce enormously
Clymene · 01/12/2021 23:01

@Skysblue

Wow.

Trying to stop lifeboats. Just wow.

Are you referring to my post? Confused I want people to be able to claim asylum safely in Britain. No one should die trying. I am utterly ashamed of the way we treat refugees
SnipSnipMrBurgess · 01/12/2021 23:01

So you don't condone, but understand and want to explain why some people would rather let people drown and die frightened and scared in the sea?

Because I don't understand your thought process, that you took the time to carefully explain, using examples and Person X analogies, why its understandable to let people drown, rather than expending your energies in denouncing those people.

Christ, the high ups really have it made don't they? They get to sit back and relax while everyone Shits on the person below them and blames them for how shit things are in the world.

CheeseMmmm · 01/12/2021 23:02

Have you got s link? Didn't know about that plan.

I do think it highly unlikely that anything positive is going to happen under current govt.

Itinerary · 01/12/2021 23:03

So we're should be working with the rest of Europe and especially France to try to find a way through all this.

Agreed, but how? France has repeatedly blocked plans where illegal migrants could be returned, and Macron is petty enough to cancel our Home Secretary from attending the relevant summit in Calais. He seems more interested in electioneering than actually trying to solve the problem.

The problem isn't migration, it's uncontrolled illegal migration organised by greedy criminal gangs charging thousands for a crossing which has every chance of going horribly wrong.

I personally see nothing wrong in controlling migration, as long as genuine refugees are considered and everyone else goes through the correct procedures. Our island is overpopulated to several times its sustainable level. However it is abhorrent that anyone should try to stop the RNLI from doing their work.

EmpressCixi · 01/12/2021 23:06

My plan was already stated.... “Should have a full scale humanitarian operation in France where they can just walk in and apply for asylum without having to risk their lives.”
lunarlandscape · 01/12/2021 23:09

How heartless can people be. Do they really lack the capacity to imagine being that desperate for safety?

Clymene · 01/12/2021 23:09

@CheeseMmmm

Have you got s link? Didn't know about that plan.

I do think it highly unlikely that anything positive is going to happen under current govt.

I heard someone from Calais Action bring interviewed the other day on Today. It's mentioned here: www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2021/nov/25/solutions-to-the-channel-problem-what-experts-and-campaigners-say
CheeseMmmm · 01/12/2021 23:10

Who pays for it?
Who works there?
Etc. Practicalities.

Also just lost post to clymene saying interesting do you have links to the offer/ rejection etc really interesting.

Also said highly doubt anything useful will be done about this with current govt.

EmpressCixi · 01/12/2021 23:11

@Clymene
The U.K. government refuses to process asylum applications in France, despite repeated invitations.

This is exactly the problem and why we need a full humanitarian operation in France so we can process applications there.
