Hi
My daughter 10 yrs has asked for a camera for christmas like a GOPro, Been looking at these and I just do not understand these things,Me and Tech just do not get on,So i am asking if any of you can help me figure out what she needs to be able to do pointless rubbish on social media such a rubbish dances and mini documentaries about leaves and bugs for example!! It is all beyond me.So what do I need and more to the point is there a way of doing this reasonably regarding price? Can anyone help me please as I really do have no clue what so ever and to be honest it sounds like she speaks in a weird language when she tries to explain, yes I am that thick! No clue what she is on about so over to you please can anyone educate me ?
Thank you

I’ll get shot down but at ten years old she doesn’t need to be on Social Media.

A camera is a great idea though.

At ten she can't have a YouTube channel. But on the camera front, pretty much any with video capabilities will be fine as a starter cam. What is your budget? If she wants to edit you will need computer software for that, there's a range of free or paid ones.

No you won;t get shot down ,not from me I promise!!! She sees tiktok things from kids like dances and things in school and wants to do things like that, but I have no clue how they do these things or what tech they need. She only has the kids tik tok and we do moniter her screen time and view it with her and with you tube the same, She watches all things on our laptop and phones not her own,Currently its learnig line dancing tutorials that seem to be all consuming!!

If I do need to buy these things I suppose my budget ould be no more than £500 is it doable? or shall I try to steer her away and have a complete rethink? Open to all advice!

For tiktok the easiest bet would be a phone, with a camera she's going to have to make sure she films it the correct orientation and then transfer it to a phone to upload to tiktok and add the tiktok background music.

LemonMuffins · 30/11/2021 09:40

Agree, phone plus tripod/stand is all that she needs for tik tok type videos.

Thank you so much @Tusco That is really clear advice, I am feeling the fog lift slightly!

Having streamed in the past and been online from when the internet was really young in the very early 1990’s plus I’m admin on a discord channel beware of any kind of online life for children. My DS makes YouTube videos, but it’s gameplay and music not his face nor his voice.

You need nothing remotely fancy to make Tik Tok videos just a phone and a stand.

Iputthetrampintrampoline · 30/11/2021 09:59

Right phone and stand and stick to tiktok decision made,She can cope without You Tube and stick to her age appropriate level. Thank you all so much for your advice I cannot tell you all how much I have appreciated all your input it has really helped.

On the under 13 tiktok app she won't be able to post videos. So if you go for the one for over 13s, her account may be deleted, but also make sure her account is private, keep on top of comments, who is following her (only people she knows) etc.
