Rhesus negative

Any other mums rhesus negative? I had DS in the 1980s and he is also Rh negative but I was never given anti D as I realised many years later. Luckily I never had any more chdren or it could have been a disaster.
Any Rh negative stories out there?

Yeah, 3 healthy kids, 2 uneventful pregnancies ( twins second time) , anti d given, no problems at all.

gamerchick · 28/11/2021 20:03

@ArnoldBee

In the olden days - 2012 and before you didn't get anti d injections during pregnancy. After birth they tested the baby's blood and gave you an injection if required.
The olden days? Tickled me that Grin

My last baby was 2007, I was pestered all the way though to have anti D injections.

My first was 1995 and it was testing at birth.

santabetterwashhishands · 28/11/2021 20:04

All my three kids are positive I'm negative but I had the injections after each birth.
I did after have extra blood tests with the third pregnancy as my body started to produce antibodies in the last week but she was perfectly fine .

Yes my first was 1998 and anti d definitely given.

Curtainpoleofdoom · 28/11/2021 20:07

Interesting, thanks. I’m r- and I didn’t get the first jab until almost too late in the pregnancy as the midwife’s forgot or didn’t realise I was r-.

RadishRose · 28/11/2021 20:10

I’m A- and had my babies in the 2000s I refused Anti D because husband also A-. Had to sign a bit of paper to say that this was my choice as midwives were insisting I had to have it even though it was completely unnecessary.

HowToMurderYourLife · 28/11/2021 20:11

@Heepers I had the fetal blood typing on 2018 and they told me I didn't need the anti d at all as DD was negative. Maybe it varies from trust to trust!

Gatekeeper · 28/11/2021 20:14

@RadishRose...me too .I'm rhesus negative and so is Dh but they were still pressing me to have Anti D (babies in 2000's as well)

Gatredge · 28/11/2021 20:14

Those saying you don't need it if baby is also rh neg - that's not quite true. They don't know the baby's blood type until they are born so they give you the first shot just in case. You have a 2nd shot after the birth if they are positive. Both my kids are rh neg so I only needed the shot during the pregnancies. When I had a miscarriage in between I needed a shot then too.

dementedpixie · 28/11/2021 20:16

In some places they can test during the pregnancy plus if the father is Rh- too then you will have an Rh- baby

afternamechangefail · 28/11/2021 20:16

@Curtainpoleofdoom

What happened, in the real old days, to r- women and future r+ pregnancies?
Rhesus disease. Sadly
NatMoz · 28/11/2021 20:17

I'm 38 weeks pregnant. Had mine at 28 weeks. No idea what husband's blood group is so could go either way for baby when born

They can test the baby's blood now. Usually at 16 weeks
Bells3032 · 28/11/2021 20:21

Currently pregnant with my first. I'm Rh negative. They did a fetal dna screen and baby is also negative. Usually you have an anti d injection at 28 weeks and after baby Is born. But they said i don't need them. Will double check baby's blood type when born

CaptainMyCaptain · 28/11/2021 20:21

@Quackajack

They check the babies blood after birth and you only need the anti d if the baby is rhd positive.
This, although I was given it in 1980 before they found out daughter was also Rh Neg.
RubyTuesday70 · 28/11/2021 20:22

I'm rh positive, but DD1 was born rh negative, although we didn't know this for many years. My 2nd baby (DS) was stillborn, and all they found in my blood tests was a group of antibodies - nothing was "wrong" exactly and it was dismissed as a possible cause. My 3rd and 4th pregnancies were fine albeit stressful, and I had 2 healthy DDs as a result.

I do wonder though if it was anything to do with those antibodies.

The fetal blood screening is still relatively new. I didn’t have it with DC1 in 2016 but did with DC2 in 2019 and my doctor said it still varied by trust at that stage.

Heepers · 28/11/2021 20:24

@howtomurderyourlife I could be wrong about that! I think maybe I'm confusing it with when both parents are RH- but they still want to give anti D.

dementedpixie · 28/11/2021 20:25

You dont get the same issue if you are Rh+ with a Rh- baby though. Maybe it was a different kind of incompatibility

afternamechangefail · 28/11/2021 20:31

There are other issues with different antibodies in pregnancy. Not just rhesus stuff

WhistlersandJugglers · 28/11/2021 20:31

Me and DH are both Rh- and the midwife on my first pregnancy insisted that I get the Anti D shot anyway because they had no proof he was the father. It always seemed very odd to me. I didn't have it on subsequent pregnancies.

gamerchick · 28/11/2021 20:35

I got it as well. They were well miffed and said they can't take my word for it that my ex was the dad.

Still refused it. Not having that thing when it wasn't necessary.

Slayduggee · 28/11/2021 20:40

I’m rhesus negative and had DC1 in 2017 and DC2 in 2020. They took blood when I was 12 weeks pregnant and they could identify that that baby on each occasion so I wasn’t given anti d.

TreeLawney · 28/11/2021 20:41

I know my grandmother was very worried all through my pregnancy because she had lost more than one baby to rhesus disease (3 pregnancies I think, one of which was twins). She did have 4 successful pregnancies though.

But luckily by the time 2011 came around I had one injection at 28 weeks and another after birth and all was well, for my second full-term pregnancy too.

Isn’t science brilliant?

Gatredge · 28/11/2021 20:44

That's interesting, is must vary by location then. My pregnancies were 2016,2017,2018,given anti-d as a precaution every time.
