Are blue eyes really the most common eye colour in the U.K.?

In my Sunday boredom I googled U.K. eye colour breakdown. I found a study from a few years ago that found blue eyes were the most common. Break down as follows:

Blue - 48%
Green - 30%
Brown - 22%

In contrast 90% of the world’s population has brown eyes 👀

Am I the only one surprised by this? I could have sworn brown was the most common and green was the rarest? I’m really not sure I believe it, especially as it misses out hazel.

It also said blue numbers are increasing due to natural selection.

Maybe my experience has been skewed by living exclusively in London and the South East all my life. Do these stats fit in with your experience?

@JuliTooley

I am not totally shocked that blue eyes are the most common in the UK, as the UK population is over 87% Caucasian.

Most people in Scotland and Ireland have blue eyes, or green. Most of my extended family, (AND DH's too,) have blue eyes (Irish and Welsh and Scandinavian roots on both sides.) My parents, and DH's, all had blue eyes, and so did their siblings and cousins and parents and grandparents and great grandparents etc etc etc...

In the world though, less than 10% of people have blue eyes. So, world-wide, blue eyes are quite rare.

Also, according to this report, it is true that the UK has almost 50% of people with blue eyes. Easy to believe, because as I said, the UK is over 87% white, and most people in Scotland and Ireland have blue eyes.

I do like dark brown eyes - not to keen on pale blue/grey. I love green (but I have green so I’m biased!)

In our house green is the most common, my son and I have green eyes, my husbands are blue.

Mine were actually chocolate brown when I was little - but they changed at some point to green (I remember realising this and being quite surprised) and they do change tone (depending on if I am feeling ill or run down). One of my sisters does this too.
