Random one… but where are the lychees?!

We are currently locked down as we all have, or are recovering from Covid.
Over supper we were discussing Christmas food.
My DD(8) piped up that she’d like some dragon eggs. After about 5 minutes of trying to work out WTF she was talking about, we decided she meant lychees. So I look at Ocado (and the usual online grocery outlets) as I can’t venture into a shop for at least another week.
Lo and behold I can’t find a sodding lychee anywhere. I find tea, facial scrub etc etc. Not a lychee.

Is this due to a bad harvest/ brexit/ Covid?
Can anyone enlighten me?

Sh!t. The above sounds very middle class. But a genuine search…

I can't find them either

Santaischeckinglists · 27/11/2021 19:28

Omg really? Best bit of the desserts imo!!

Harpydragon · 27/11/2021 19:28

Is it not the wrong season for lychee, they usually run June to September in the uk

SequinnedShawl · 27/11/2021 19:29

I got some from Amazon the other week (but having just checked so I could give you the link, they're currently unavailable, sorry) the only other ones on there are £££££

I think it must have been a bad harvest or something. Pity as I love them!

Littlemessymiss · 27/11/2021 19:29

If anyone can go near a shop, please enlighten me of the outcome!

I buy them in asda but you can only get them in some of their stores so they're not online. I think if you're restricted to online all you can get is tinned ones from morrisons.

SW1amp · 27/11/2021 19:30

Can you get tinned ones?
Now you mention it, I can’t actually remember the last time I saw fresh ones in a shop…

Simonjt · 27/11/2021 19:31

They’re out of season, so if you do find fresh ones they’ll be fairly tasteless.

Pinkywoo · 27/11/2021 19:32

Is there a Chinese market near you? My ex used to get whole crates of them for a big family Christmas.

Littlemessymiss · 27/11/2021 19:33

The weird fruit eating DD like peeling the “dragon eggs”. She is an odd one. The other DD only likes beige so you have to be thankful for small mercies.

@Pinkywoo, I used to work in China and at this time of year there would be lychees and fruit similar to lychees but I can’t for the life of me remember what they were.

Rambutan or longan?

cultkid · 27/11/2021 19:36

I was honestly thinking about this today as well

So weird you posted a thread

Can't find them anywhere I'm annoyed they are an integral part of my winter

Glinsk · 27/11/2021 19:40

I adore lychees but admit I've only ever had tinned ones, Iuse the in a sweet and sour recipe. There is a world food store in a nearby town that sells fresh and canned ones.
I had some last week in a takeaway.

Littlemessymiss · 27/11/2021 20:16

First thing I shall do post lockdown, is go on the hunt. Last month, I stumbled upon an amazing Iraqi guy running a fruit and vege shop in tiny town. He sold me prickly pears, so hopefully he can supply some lychees!?

@Tripledogdare definitely Longan! They were the only available when suffering from morning sickness in an all day interview session. That or raw scallop/ sushi 🤢
