I dunno, there's huge parts of labour where you could do this handy enough.

pollyglot · 27/11/2021 20:38

Ok. An hour before giving birth? I couldn't have.

OP posts:
mbosnz · 27/11/2021 20:44

I couldn't have put my arse on the bikeseat!

IHateCoronavirus · 27/11/2021 20:46

Couldn’t open the link but well done to her. Definitely not something I could have done. At times the contractions were so strong, it felt like my body was trying to turn itself inside out!
My arse hurts riding a bike at the best of times!

ABCeasyasdohrayme · 27/11/2021 20:47

I would have went to sit on the bike and it would have disappeared where the sun doesn't shine when I was pregnant and now.

MissMinutes24 · 27/11/2021 22:26

Chutzpah means cheek - why is riding yourself to hospital to give birth cheeky?

I thought it meant over - confidence in yourself?
pollyglot · 27/11/2021 22:36

chutzpah
[ˈxʊtspə, ˈhʊtspə]
NOUN
informal
extreme self-confidence or audacity.
"love him or hate him, you have to admire Cohen's chutzpah"
synonyms:
audacity · cheek · guts · nerve · boldness · self-confidence · gall · temerity · effrontery

Omg I couldn’t even sit in a wheelchair, hats off to her!

Twolostsoulsswimminginafishbow · 27/11/2021 22:42

First twinge to birth with all three DCs was an hour or less. I have preciiitous labours so if I’d set off with the first inkling I was in labour I could have done it. We live around the corner from our local hospital, literally a five minute walk. Would I have attempted this? Not a chance in hell. As it was I barely made it through the doors.

Hen2018 · 28/11/2021 01:24

I never had more than 5 minutes between contractions so would only have been able to cycle 0.5 miles at a time.

Also our hospital is 2 hours at least away by bike and I wasn’t in labour that long.

alexdgr8 · 28/11/2021 01:28

it means a kind of arrogance and extreme cheek.
as in the man who murdered his parents and then begged the court's mercy, on the grounds that he was an orphan.

BalloonSlayer · 28/11/2021 07:14

@alexdgr8 Ialways thought of that definition during Oskar Pistorious's trial.

toolazytothinkofausername · 28/11/2021 07:36

The fact this publicity stunt didn't go wrong was complete sheer dumb luck! She was foolish to put herself and her baby at risk for political gain. Having photos taken of herself saying "oh look how marvellous I am" is cringe.

I think it's inspiring.

Exactly. You're using it incorrectly. It means confidence in the sense of a cheeky fucker not confidence in the sense of someone riding themselves to hospital.
MissMinutes24 · 28/11/2021 08:34

I grew up with my entire family speaking Yiddish but do feel free to continue Jewsplaining btw.

Yeah I agree, it definitely means someone’s taking the piss in a cheeky way, not over confidence.

LubaLuca · 28/11/2021 08:38

Did she cycle home with the baby as well? I can't see the story.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 28/11/2021 08:40

Seems like a risk to me.
Also fine that it was ok for her, she was able and it all worked out. I do hope she isn't suggesting that this means anyone else should do it, because that would be arrogant and dangerous IMO.
I'm fully on board with the green agenda but every labour is different, and just because this was possible and not dangerous for her absolutely does not mean it is possible or safe for anyone else.

GreenCereal · 28/11/2021 08:41

I believe she lives in the suburb next to the hospital. A 5 minute bike ride, without the contractions.
Not that I could have even contemplated it!

I'm 99% sure that's an electric bike. Definitely not the same as cycling a regular bike - significantly less effort involved. If she was seeing stars like I was in labour then she'd have been seriously injured.

I hope this doesn't turn into some new form of competition for expectant/new mothers..which results in women feeling guilty because they took a car.

What she's done is akin to women who don't put on weight during pregnancy thinking they've done something amazing (ie not like those other women who got "fat"), or the ones who "managed to have a natural delivery" aka did what women have been doing since humans inhabited the planet, but implicitly imply they're better than someone who had a c-section or used epidural, because what they did is an achievement.

Good for her for getting herself to her preferred delivery location before giving birth. I hope her political achievements are more significant.

ImperfectTents · 28/11/2021 09:47

Love it. Its a sweet story.
