How is Storm Arwen affecting you?

Soubriquet · 27/11/2021 15:11

So far, I’ve had 3 power cuts which is not good as I’m trying to do a load of washing, plus I have tropical fish that need the heat, and a spider who needs bright light

Currently very windy and wet outside. Also cold

You

@AmazingBouncingFerret

I’m midlands based and have lost my husband. He had to set off in the early hours of the morning to the very top end of Scotland to carry out repair work on roofs.
I'm so sorry
hellcatspangle · 27/11/2021 17:01

@teaandtoastwithmarmite I'm not sure PP meant lost as in permanently did she? I took it to mean he's been out a long time.

santabetterwashhishands · 27/11/2021 17:01

We got a few inches of snow and lots of wind that's wrecked my fence but there's always someone worse off . I'm at home in the warmth with electric so I count my blessings.

TheChosenTwo · 27/11/2021 17:02

Nothing here. I mean, it’s windy but nothing else as far as I can tell.
I’ve been in bed with a migraine since about 6pm last night, I’m only just starting to feel a bit better, I may have missed more drama! I’ve been on and off awake all day and could hear the wind outside, but Dh has not reported any damage. Bins are still there, fence panels all present and correct, no power cuts… all okay.
Stay safe everyone, catching up on the news and saw the storm related deaths. Stay indoors if you can! Flowers

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 27/11/2021 17:03

@hellcatspangle I wasn't sure either way but once I'd posted it I thought she meant he'd gone off for the day. Hopefully he's safe Smile

Can I make a claim for the most embarrassing consequence of Storm Arwen? We went to the seaside to see the fearsome waves. I have alopecia and wear a gorgeous (and expensive) wig. For the first time ever, the wind was strong enough to make me fear that it was going to take a little ride in the sky, so I pulled my hood up and all was well -- for a while. But when we headed back towards the car, the wind was full in my face so I had to admit defeat and whisk my wig off, relying on my hood to disguise the situation. Having nowhere else to put my wig, I shoved it down my trousers (where it had a nicely warming effect on the ladygarden zone).

But, alas! When I got to the car, I realised that it was gone! There followed 15 minutes of me scuttling around in the gale, holding my hood in place, and looking frantically for my £££ wig in all the manky dog-poo crevices of the carpark and surrounding fields.

No luck. Got back in the car, dismayed and poor. Then had a final rummage down me trousers and realised that the wig had burrowed right down to my wellington-booted ankle to escape the storm. Blush

I have guffawed laughing at this!

Am imagining your lovely wig as a small dormouse in your welly.

So glad you found it!

I do hope @AmazingBouncingFerret means he’s gone to work for the day when he didn’t need to instead of the worse outcome but I know 3 men have died so far. Just hope he isn’t one of them

Just a bit wet and windy for us in south east London so not too bad.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 27/11/2021 17:40

S Lakes. Next door's fence has gone kaput. I've lost a bunch of plantpots and some roof tiles. A few trees down. A man was killed just up the road in Ambleside by a falling tree, poor sod. It's still howling a gale here. Not rainy though. The tops have got snow on.

Phyllis321 · 27/11/2021 17:41

My mini greenhouse is currently on its side. Our loose fence panel is crashing loudly against its post. There was a tree laying across the main road earlier. I was woken up several times by a tin can clattering down the road. Nothing bad, just unsettling.

Sleepinghyena · 27/11/2021 17:44

No power since 1am. Won't be back on until tomorrow afternoon 😭 Lost contents of a large fridge and 2 freezers. We can't get gas here so have no way to cook.
Really want a shower and a coffee!!

AmazingBouncingFerret · 27/11/2021 19:51

Oh good god I didn’t even realise how it could have been construed when I posted that. To classify, I have lost him for the weekend.
Thankfully he is safely tucked up in a hotel room right now.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 27/11/2021 19:53

Ffs to Clarify not classify. 😂

Breathmiller · 27/11/2021 21:01

RainbowBaby SE Scotland. Still no power. Update is 10pm tomorrow which will have been over 48 hours without power. Candlight and no heating is getting boring now.

Same for family NE - told probably tomorrow night or Monday before they get electric now. I’ve lost all contact with them now, hopefully they have the sense to get in the car and drive to hotel or something . Must be bloody freezing as it’s snowing up there now too .
Salome61 · 27/11/2021 23:42

I'm in the NE, last night was terrifying, even the lamp posts were bending like the palm trees in a hurricane. I've just downsized to a bungalow, could hear how bad the wind was, then a scary crash and huge sliding noise - flat roof on the extension had been torn up and was sticking out over the bathroom/bedroom. Next thing I know water starts coming through the spotlights, dog was terrified. Managed to get bowls/buckets under most of the leaks and shut the electricity off, moved the tv and piles and piles of books and came into the tiled roofed bungalow bedroom. Slept fully dressed in case I had to go outside, what a night.

Managed to ring the insurance company today, an assessor should be here within 7 days. Unfortunately I've got to set my alarm for 4 am to empty the buckets. My roofer did say he'd come today to put a temporary tarpaulin but never showed.

RainbowBabyForChristmasPlease · 27/11/2021 23:44

@Breathmiller thank you. I was just wondering cos my OH who's in the North East hasn't had any power since around 11pm last night and it isn't due to come back on till around midday tomorrow. I did tell him he could use the gas part of the hob to at least make a coffee or heat some soup up even if the ignition switch wasn't working by using a lighter but he doesn't trust himself not to blow himself up. He said thankfully it's just his street and the chippy was still open

Gingernaut · 27/11/2021 23:46

Trains are disrupted because of fallen trees

There's water getting in around the exteral seals of my bathroom window,

FearBreedsCompliance · 27/11/2021 23:52

The lid flew off our sandpit

AndStand · 27/11/2021 23:59

I've put a lashing strap around my beehive to stop their roof flying off. My poor bees are huddled together humming gently. I hope they're ok out there.

Sebastianthecoo · 27/11/2021 23:59

We’ve had no power or heating since ; pm yesterday and it’s not scheduled to come back on till 10 pm tomorrow. No phone signal either except for one tiny corner of the house. Lost 70 metres of fencing but nothing compared to a man locally who was killed by a falling tree. Absolutely devastation all round us.

HeidiHaus · 28/11/2021 00:04

SE but nothing much apart from breeze and light drizzle. Cold though

TheScottishPlay · 28/11/2021 00:12

Second night without electricity. I've been at work all day so was OK there. DS worked in the afternoon, then he and DH went to his DF's (with power) and had tea there. DH then went home for clothes etc. It was 3 degrees C in the house. They picked me up at 10 and we're currently in a Travelodge 30 miles from home (15 from work) as it was the nearest available.
