Why are magazines 'publish' one month ahead

I've pondered this for years - reckon someone in here will know the answer.

Reading a home style type magazine that is clearly rammed cover to cover with Xmas decs, recipes, styling, gifts etc etc. so why doesn't it say 'December 2021' on the cover? It has 'January 2022' on it. It totally does not relate to January in the slightest?!?!

Is there an obvious answer I'm missing?

I never understand this either, but no idea why!

I've also always wondered this!

I think it's so they still look current at the end of the month.

This would make sense, I have also always wanted to know this!

Could understand that for some other times in the year.....but by the end of Dec I'll be done with Christmas and would steer clear of a magazine that was Christmas themed even if it said Jan on it!
