It's occurred to me that my next birthday I'll be 40 and I'm not sure HOW that's happened. But I'd like to do a 40 before I'm 40 list.

I've done some googling, and the lists have things that cost a lot of money or are quite materialistic. I'm on a low income and need to be realistic.

Please spam this thread with ideas.
I'm currently hiding from my kids in a local cafe trying to have a bit of headspace, and thinking writing this list may help cheer me up after a crappy week.

Make a cake dough and it the whole thing raw.

See the sunrise

Camp out without a tent

Visit your childhood home/school (outside)

RobertSmithsLipstick · 26/11/2021 19:04

Go skinny dipping.

Sleep in a hammock.

Starisnotanumber · 26/11/2021 19:07

Visit Avebury stone circle see sunrise or sunset or picnic within the stones
Free to go in better than stonehenge all you pay for is parking

ByeBumpHiBaby · 26/11/2021 19:07

Learn a new language (obviously won't be fluent but could make a good start!)

RoseAndRose · 26/11/2021 19:07

Learn the names of 40 stars and where to spot their constellations in the night sky

LuvMyBoyz · 26/11/2021 19:08

Sunset from a high point.

A familiar walk in the dark.

JennysWell · 26/11/2021 19:08

Climb a mountain
Skinny dip (or moonlight/sunrise/sunset dip)
Some distance event e.g. London/Brighton cycle
Run a marathon (or even a 5k if you’ve never done one before)
Attend a Cèilidh
Jump off a cliff/waterfall (make sure it’s a known safe one!)
Visit museum/gallery
Tall building visit
Learn to Salsa

WomanWithDiamondEarring · 26/11/2021 19:10

Learn a language
Go wild swimming
Read all of Jane Austen
Stich a cross stitch sampler with your name and date of birth at the bottom.
Go to an antique/vintage shop and spend £20 on something that takes your eye

AuntieStella · 26/11/2021 19:12

Do a parkrun (you can walk it if you don't want to run)

Go wild swimming

Find a bike trail that's at least 20 miles (might have to pay to hire, but shouldn't be expensive) - bonus points if you have a front wicker basket with sandwiches and lashings of ginger beer, more bonus points if you can attach that to a Boris bike!

Try one new sport

Get in a boat on a river somehow - anything from kayak to tourist gun palace

Starisnotanumber · 26/11/2021 19:13

Visit an art gallery and see a really famous painting and see if you can see why it's better than others. If you say where you are someone could advise you which gallery/painting

BingoandBluey · 26/11/2021 19:14

Great idea!

Here's my suggestions:

Start learning a language on the Duolingo app
Read some classic novels from the library
Climb up a big hill and have a picnic
Go stargazing
Watch the sunrise/sunset somewhere beautiful
Get a new hairstyle
Try a cocktail recipe at home with a friend
Go somewhere new for a day out
Do something that scares you
Book something to look forward to for when you're 40

AuntieStella · 26/11/2021 19:14

*gin palace!

But having a taster session at a gun club might be one to add?

TheScenicWay · 26/11/2021 19:24

Upcycle some furniture
Enter a charity event and raise some money
Read a book about something you’ve always been interested in but never found out more about.

RobertSmithsLipstick · 26/11/2021 19:29

Have a go at water divining.

Knit something and put it on show in your house (even if it's a tiny coaster)

AuntieStella · 26/11/2021 19:30

Cook dinner over a real campfire, with marshmallows toasted on twigs as pudding

Read a book in one sitting

Go for high tea at a Really Posh hotel (ok, this one costs, but less than for dinner)

Visit a beach you've not been to before

Write a real letter a week - to people in your life, to newspapers, to your MP, your councillor, the Queen

Go to the races (big swanky meet or local point to point, greyhounds, anything)

Go to a big county show

PotteringAlong · 26/11/2021 19:31

Learn to knit
Do a park run
Make your own 40th birthday cake

EssexLioness · 26/11/2021 19:34

Picnic under the stars

RobertSmithsLipstick · 26/11/2021 19:34

Make yourself a pretty pair of earrings.

Spend a whole day in bed.

Eat something you've never tried before.

Spend a whole day wearing a funky hat.

Paint a face on each of your toenails.

babasaclover · 26/11/2021 19:39

Can I join please? Bday August 2022 how are we nearly 40 😫😫😫

AuntieStella · 26/11/2021 19:44

(Morbid but serious: make a will if you haven't done it yet)

Get some photos taken - nude if you dare - because whatever you think your figure flaws, you are terrific

Make something you will use frequently - knit a hat/scarf, earrings, a coffee table or spice rack

Learn a poem of at least 40 lines by heart

shinynewapple21 · 27/11/2021 14:51

I'm way older than 40 but I think this is a great idea - will probably steal some of the suggestions

NuffSaidSam · 27/11/2021 16:00

Wild swimming
Volunteer somewhere
Watch a famous movie that you've never seen (or a movie from the year you were born).
Same with book.
Same with album.
Cook, go out or order in a dish/cuisine you haven't tried before
Try a sport you haven't tried before
Do some kind of endurance event (whatever endurance means for you), swimming/walking/running/camping outside - just something that will be physically hard (but not impossible) for you.

YourHandInMyHand · 29/11/2021 15:55

Ooh thanks everybody, lots of fab ideas!
