hello,

my 27 week premature baby is coming home on tuesday and will require home oxygen for 24 hours a day. the forms are a nightmare frankly and before I fill them all in, was wondering the chances of me qualifying. I have no idea how long he will need it for, I guess until his lungs mature and he can breathe unaided.

thanks for any assistance

Congratulations on your baby. I don't think you'll qualify as the conditions have to last at least a year and they have to make the care your baby requires significantly greater than another child of the same age. They might argue that all newborns require a high degree of care.

ISpyCobraKai · 26/11/2021 15:54

Unfortunately not, but I wish you all the best and congratulations on your new baby.

I think your child has to be three months old before applying for DLA ,but yes if your child requires oxygen you should definitely apply for DLA .

we have been told to aim for his 1st birthday as he has chronic lung disease. ah I might try and see what happens, really not looking forward to doing these forms :(

But I would ask for this thread to be moved to special need chat / children

Congratulations!

Your baby must have had the condition for at least 3 months with it expected to last for at least 6 months more to qualify.

have also been told he will find it difficult to be put in a nursery setting when I go back to work which is the other thing I'm worried about

If he is already 3 months and you have been told that then yes apply. Do you have it written in any reports by any chance?

Applying is tough; and at the moment it seems to be taking a long time for them to process. It would possibly only be a year award for now but with any luck by then things will have developed enough he doesn’t need it.

Good luck!

You may be eligible for a blue badge if he is on oxygen 24/7, depending on eho issues badges in your local authority.

Carrying bulky medical equipment (I.e. oxygen and sats monitors) definitely qualifies you for a blue badge where I live

And get onto ss children with disabilities team for additional support

Clymene · 26/11/2021 16:26

Oh I stand corrected! Sorry, I thought it was a year.

The forms are horrible and take forever but I think they backdate the payment to the date you applied. Very good suggestion for apply for a blue badge too

I wouldn’t get this post moved, the special needs children board is so quiet I’ve posted there before and barely get a response, there are some Facebook groups specific for dla that may be able to help
