MS teams for interview

Babysharkdoodoodood · 25/11/2021 16:11

This will sound silly but I have an interview on teams next week, but I've never used it.

Just put the app on my iPad now. I've used zoom and Skype before. I also have to show them my passport, so do I take a photo and send it during the interview?

Feel like a real numpty as it looks complicated compared to zoom.

Have they sent you a link for the meeting, if so you just click it to join.

They will want to see you on camera holding your passport.
Good luck!

MikeWozniaksMohawk · 25/11/2021 16:15

You can only use the app if your email address is connected to work or school account. But otherwise when you click the link that’s been sent to you, you can use it in your normal internet browser. It’s really easy.

whatwoulddexterdo · 25/11/2021 16:27

You don't need to download it in advance
They should send you a meeting invitation to join via desktop,
It's very similar to zoom
Re the passport, you need to hold up the actual original to the camera so they can see your picture etc

I had an interview via teams and had never used it before so I got my husband to send me a meeting invite so I could practice in advance

Top tip from me is to use earphones

Good luck 👍

honeylemonteaforme · 25/11/2021 23:26

Look up some tutorials on YouTube or similar. Make sure you understand how to navigate the different views to make sure you can see everyone not just the speaker

CatNameChange101 · 25/11/2021 23:54

For the passport is it for right to work? If so they will need a clear picture of it for their records and you just need to show your passport. Make sure you don’t have a background filter on for the background, makes it a nightmare to view them!

They should advise the OP to use a filter for safeguarding reasons.

MS are "looking into" making it possible to enforce it as a policy apparently.

RampantIvy · 26/11/2021 07:57

Definitely use a headset with a microphone so that they can hear you clearly.

The problem with background filters is that they look like your shoulders are being cut off when you move, so if you use one keep as still as you can.

Do you know anyone who uses Teams who can set up a call with you so that you can practise? You just click on the link in your email at the allotted time.

Good luck.

Emilygoesa · 26/11/2021 08:01

As said above, make sure to click their link to enter the meeting. They invite you in to the meeting, it's not just answering a call.
Good luck!

Starcaller · 26/11/2021 08:03

I had to turn off the filter to show my passport the other day as it was too blurry otherwise and she couldn't see it properly.

CSJobseeker · 26/11/2021 08:05

I've done teams interviews and I was expected to hold my passport up to the camera.

CSJobseeker · 26/11/2021 08:06

Theyshouldadvise the OP to use a filter for safeguarding reasons.

What exactly are these safeguarding reasons?

I can't imagine how the interviewers seeing the wall and door behind me could possibly compromise anyone's safety.

RampantIvy · 26/11/2021 08:38

Yes. I wondered the same @CSJobseeker.

Babysharkdoodoodood · 26/11/2021 08:42

Thanks. I've got it on my iPad, with a stand. Also got my headphones. I'll get my son to trial it with me this weekend.

OP posts:
TravellingSpoon · 26/11/2021 08:50

What safeguarding reasons?

I do all my teams/Zoom meetings in front of a bookshelf, I cant imagine there are many security concerns with that surely?

521Jeanie · 26/11/2021 09:20

@RampantIvy

Yes. I wondered the same *@CSJobseeker*.
And me! One thing is there's family wandering around behind you, but if you're locked away in the spare room with a neutralish background, as I presume you would be for a job interview? Surely the safeguarding thing is to protect children or vulnerable adults who might be part of the call (eg in a school setting) from accidental flashes of someone's dad in his undies? I would have thought the need for a clear picture of the interviewee trumped the need for privacy in this setting anyway?
RampantIvy · 26/11/2021 09:51

I WFH in a spare bedroom that has been turned into a study. The only things my workmates can see is a wall, a picture on the wall, the door and part of a bookcase. Hardly outing.

This isn't true.

You can use teams with any Microsoft email address if not a work/school account

E.g. outlook.co.uk/live.com/Hotmail

OMGisthisforreal · 26/11/2021 10:22

You can use teams by downloading the app then click on the link you’ll be emailed. You don’t need to have a ‘work’ or school email address. I’ve joined teams meetings for cork and medical appointments using my personal email address.
You’ll be asked to type in your name then you’ll see a message saying the administrator will welcome you to the meeting shortly.
You then need to deselect muted microphone and video buttons then you’ll see your image and away you go - much like zoom and Skype.
As with any new site, and because it’s so important to your interview, it would be good to familiarise yourself with a trial go beforehand

Good luck with your interview!

RaininSummer · 26/11/2021 10:27

Remember to look at the camera rather than the faces on screen .

RampantIvy · 26/11/2021 12:13

Good point about unmuting the mike and the camera. They are usually automatically muted.

You do have a camera on your iPad don't you @Babysharkdoodoodood?

CatNameChange101 · 26/11/2021 13:35

Yep utter nonsense that you should have a filter on, it makes viewing an ID often impossible.

The person who sent you the link is most likely an admin person. Give them a call or an email and say you’d like to test the link. I’ve done this prior to interviews before and it’s been fine. I got my last job after doing it in fact.

Yup. Use it for my personal trainer on zoom regularly. Got the email invites and there's a 30 minute test Shockon Monday as well. Eeeep. Hopefully an inbox type thing.

Thought I'd update

Unsuccessful Sad

But apparently the interview was good and I just missed out due to the points system and they've asked me to apply for another role coming up in a fortnight.

Babysharkdoodoodood · 22/12/2021 16:19

In case anyone is interested. I reapplied as they suggested and got the job!! Whoop
