Seriously in the 80s only 27 beaches were monitored for cleanliness and only 9 passed the UKs own rules. It took successful court cases against the UK like the one in 1993 concerning Blackpool's seafront to chivvy along the clean up. Also took 30 billion pounds of investment by water and waste companies over 20 years, pushed along by EU directives. Tragic isn't it and we trust them to save the planet...Confused
