Which job?

Need some thoughts/perspective please I have a 3 year old who is currently in nursery 3 days a week, I'm married with no other commitments.

Job 1 (and current job): literally 5 minutes from home in home town where toddler has nursery, set days and hours. 3 days a week. Weekends off. Is very mundane, not a career and absolutely not what I want to be doing, small business that could potentially close within a couple of years as owner has serious illness which will see her need to sell and no family to take it on.

Job 2: Had an offer for this job but unsure whether to take it. 15/20 minute commute. 4 long days a week making it full time hours, shifts could be weekends/evenings/bank holidays etc. Rota is a 6 week rolling rota though so would know my shifts well in advance. Comes with a really good pay rise, is for a huge organisation with good company benefits. In a sector I worked in years ago and absolutely loved, the chance of career progression is high.

I have my husband as a great support, he can work his shifts around mine changing and with knowing well in advance I can organise nursery days well. So childcare shouldn't be a huge problem.

Can I have some ideas/advice/prospective please?

Is the small business something that you could see yourself doing long term? Would you consider buying the business and being the boss? If so could do the job for a while to try it out and see if the business is viable?

Sounds like the second role is what you really want to do though? Think how it could work once little one is at school - is there after school care in your area?

You present job 2 in a totally different tone so I suspect that’s the one you really want

Thanks @FanSpamTastic 😁. I have been in this job 3 years already, it's a successful business but I would not want to buy it. We rely on technology that needs seriously upgrading but the boss is very reluctant to spend anything, not sure if it's because she knows she will sell within a couple of years? Anyone taking on the business would need to put some serious investment in.

As for second role, yes, something I am really interested in. We have after school clubs plus DH dad would do a couple of drop offs/pick ups a week. Summer holidays would just be a juggle between us both taking holidays over school holiday times etc. DH can pick and choose his own shifts to an extent.

Job 2, definitely. The way you word the two descriptions you clearly sound like you want job 2!

Sounds like you have great back up and flexibility so go for it!
You will regret sticking with safe/dull I think

I think you're both right, thank you! Not sure whether it will be a shock to the system going from no commuting and 8 hour days to possibly 12 hour days and a commute! But I would always move jobs eventually so why not now?
