Ds who has just turned 8 was doing his homework which was a book report type assignment. He asked me "Mum have you heard of Harry Potter? This book is so old it was made in 1997." I was born in 1991 and Im only 30 next month but in my son's eyes I am now older than Harry Potter and this means I am the oldest person alive.

His dad is 35.

Fucking Harry Potter.

When did your kid first make you feel old?

OP posts:

When we were clearing out a cupboard and my DS found a DVD and asked 'whats this?' when I explained he said 'ah so that's how you watched films in the olden days'

I also found myself giving a 'when I was young we didn't have anything on demand we had to wait for it' type speech the other day.

I'm only 38 ffs.

When our kids started calling us the boomers because they don’t distinguish between 50 and 70. (Or are too young to know what boomers refers to).

beeswain · 24/11/2021 19:48

I grew up in the 1970's. When ds was 10 he quite seriously asked if we had indoor toilets!

@beeswain I literally grew up in a house with an outdoor toilet Grin !

My ds has called me a boomer for quite some time Grin I thank him and now consider it as a term of endearment just to wind him up! My dds call me “the ooollld lady” and use a particular voice Grin
In my class during our titanic topic, a boy asked me what it was like when it sank. It took me a while before I realised he thought I was actually alive at the time Grin
One girl thought I was 49, the same age as her mum.
Sometimes they ask me if tv was in colour when I was a child.
I’m 36.

LivingNextDoorToNorma · 24/11/2021 19:52

‘The 1990s were the olden days, did you know that?’

Anyone over 21 was born in the 90s! We’re all ancient in the eyes of a reception child.

"So what exactly is a CD?"

When someone on the radio yesterday said that 1980 was 41 years ago and in 1980 41 years earlier was 1939.

I thought the same about a doctor last week. Literally in my head I did the whole "what are you? Like, 12?" I felt terrible as she turned out to be an excellent doctor compared to others i've seen.

My dd (8) went to a Victorian centre the other day. She got to write on slates with chalkboards and play with their traditional toys etc

Today she came home talking about this interactive whiteboard everyone was given today to write with. Was talking about how lucky she was because when we was in school we had chalkboards and white boards

“Oh yes” she said “we got to write on chalkboards at the Victorian centre” Shock

DaisyNGO · 24/11/2021 20:04

a timeless, excellent tune IMHO

someone came back from a meeting and said to me "oh my god. you aren't old enough to like this song. my dad plays this song".

McDuffy · 24/11/2021 20:10

My 4yo old asked me what smoking was. She doesn't know anyone that smokes and has never clocked anyone doing it. All the adults in my family smoked (apart from my mum) in the 80s!

thistimelastweek · 24/11/2021 20:12

Did they have cows when you were little?

TheVanguardSix · 24/11/2021 20:16

DS1 is now 19, but I remember him saying, when he was around 7, 'back in the olden days... in the '80s.'
I was like YO! My man! Grin

I'm 49 now, so the '80s really are beginning to feel like the olden days, but back then, I wasn't ready for my youth to turn into some sepia-toned photo album.

MintyGreenDream · 24/11/2021 20:18

I've always loved The Simpsons watched it since being v young.Watched an episode the other day and I'm older than fucking Homer and Marge! They're 36 and I'm 41.Im officially old.

Did they have cows when you were little?
I would be tempted to say no!
TheVanguardSix · 24/11/2021 20:20

What I do like is the flip side of all this. My youngest is 7 and he asked me yesterday if I played some game on the phone... or had some app (can't remember which one) when I was a kid (I was 7 in 1979!). I tried explaining to him that we hadn't invented the wheel or discovered fire yet. I didn't really say this, but I'm not too far off. Grin

flashpaper · 24/11/2021 20:25

I was looking for some paperwork at my mums house and DS (8 at the time) found a stash of her old birthday cards. He said "now... I'm not saying nanny is old, but she must have had a LOT of birthdays".

flashpaper · 24/11/2021 20:26

Just for clarity, my poor DMum is only 64!

Cop26CopOut · 24/11/2021 20:28

I didn’t feel old until I opened this thread and realised that someone born after I started uni in 1991 could now be a mum to an 8 yr old! Shock

Thanks OP Hmm.

😂😂😂😂😂

It’s been strange having part-time staff at work who are born in 2004/2005. I have a Shrek DVD that’s older than them Blush
