Petty things that annoy you inordinately

Mine is when I pour a mug of water for tea and the teabag tag gets dragged into the mug. SO tiny but SO irritating.

Agree re. the buying local thing. Often local business expect you to pay 3x the price for something you could order online. It's not the customers responsibility to make your business viable. Offer a good service/deal and they'll buy.

MidnightMeltdown · 25/11/2021 12:59

@threecupsofteaminimum

Also, people who start sentences with, 'So'..

Oh yes. Also people who constantly throw the word 'like' into a sentence.

'He was like....., and then she was like....'. Like, like, like like like. Drives me mad.

justtheonedc · 25/11/2021 13:18

@BonesInTheOcean

Absolutely infuriated me when people say things like "mum bought Bob and I a present". No. You wouldn't say "mum bought I a present" so stop guessing and trying to sound correct and push, when you just sound like a knob.

I use the hack Grin of taking out the "and bob" which is what you have done there.
Bob and me went to the pub
.... .... me went to the pub
Bob and I went to the pub
... ... I went to the pub

That's actually really helpful. Thanks
DickMabutt73962 · 25/11/2021 13:28

The phrase 'on its/their knees'. Gives me unbelievable rage, it's so overused.

It's a Mumsnet competition to be the first to comment that on a thread about teachers/NHS.

Particularly because it's really just excusing awful service.

DickMabutt73962 · 25/11/2021 13:30

@OrangeJuiceAndNoodles

The overuse of the word 'ass'. Grown ass, bad ass, blah blah.

It does not make you sound cool.

Ditto for Americanisms such as cupcakes, candies, cookies etc.

What the hell is the 'British' word form cupcake?
DickMabutt73962 · 25/11/2021 13:34
@Chunkymenrock Phoebe does this all the time on Friends and it's so annoying!
People who just tag a poster instead of quote irrationally upsets me. I don't know what you're referring to Grin

Mrsjayy · 25/11/2021 13:41

Cupcakes are cupcakes surely?

JustFrigginNameChange · 25/11/2021 14:08

Cars in front of me who slow down to an almost stop while driving up a hill - I despise you all!

TheCategoryIs · 25/11/2021 14:49

Stationary being used to mean pens, paper etc. It may indeed be stationary but that's not what you mean.

People who talk loudly on phones on public transport, in a foreign language (so not even a chance of eavesdropping).

People who chew gum in the seat behind you on the bus.

People who would prefer to use your brain rather than their own - you send them an email with all the info they need but they have deleted it or not read it and 'just have a quick question'

percythewitch · 25/11/2021 15:07

Why so specific? Anyone that chews gum should be made to go and live in a farmyard.

Anyone that phones me whilst they are eating something can do one too.

bestert · 25/11/2021 17:12

Enrages when a client sends edits after project approval!!!

mylastmalteser · 25/11/2021 17:28

@DickMabutt73962 I was referring to the one about saying 'hey' as a greeting Smile

SequinnedShawl · 25/11/2021 18:14

@Mrsjayy

Cupcakes are cupcakes surely?
Or fairycakes.
hotmeatymilk · 25/11/2021 18:36

I’d say cupcakes are different to fairycakes – bigger, dryer, more (and more tooth-itching) icing, usually butter icing to the fairy cake’s glacé. But cupcakes are the bully boys of the cake world and have driven out fairy cakes, like grey vs red squirrels. Not a lot of butterfly cakes around any more either, not sure where they fit into my squirrel metaphor.

They were fairy cakes when I was a girl (admittedly a long time ago 😂)

I love the wildlife metaphors Grin

Maybe butterfly cakes equate to actual butterflies; sadly getting more rare Sad

Fairy cakes are smaller and usually flat iced or with a sensible amount of butter cream, I think cupcakes are different ?

SequinnedShawl · 25/11/2021 20:02

@hotmeatymilk I agree. Fairy cakes are smaller (and less dry!) Like the squirrel analogy! 😁

InPatagonia · 25/11/2021 20:18

I am extremely petty and many things wind me up. But based on tonight’s journey home from work: people who jam their knees into the back of my seat on the bus, so I can feel them pushing my back forward. Rage rage rage.

Omg that last one!!! I hate when I take my time to type out info and send to someone (usually WhatsApp) and they message later on in the week to ask me the same thing because they can't be bothered to check back in their messages. I use the chat search function!

I have a friend who's particularly bad at this so I just passive aggressively reply to my answer higher up in the message, so when she asks AGAIN what's the name of the place you told me about? I reply 'this' to the original message

PersisFord · 25/11/2021 21:13

I’ve thought of another one. That Game of Thrones episode where Ed Sheeran turns up and starts singing!!!!! That precise moment is when the whole thing started going downhill.

tearinghairout · 25/11/2021 21:16

@WheelieBinPrincess

When in Strictly Come Dancing, Tess and Claudia say ‘THERRR JUDGES’ like that. It makes me cringe every time.
Me too. Every time. Wish they'd say it like "The Judges!!"
longtompot · 25/11/2021 21:38

When people use our drive to turn around on. The road is wide enough, but they reverse right onto it and then drive off. It's not hurt anyone, but it makes my dog bark and is annoying.
As for the teabag thing I hate it when I have a herbal tea which has a label attached on a string and when pouting the water in it drags the label down into the mug. Fecking annoying.

tearinghairout · 25/11/2021 21:40

There was a time, long long ago, when we had fairy cakes - delicious airy iced delights - but they were given the boot by cupcakes. OK, the grey squirrel has ousted the red but they are still delectable. But then, along comes The Muffin. A tasteless football of stodge that feels like a punishment.

Ooh is this the UK version of the macaroon vs a macaron debate on a previous post I was on Grin (Fairy cakes are small 'cupcakes' with not too much glacé icing and some sprinkles of some sort, but the best are turned in to butterfly cakes with some very lemony buttercream. Cupcakes are style over substance with far too much sugar sweet buttercream on a dry cake, unless it's a cupcake recipe I use (which was incidentally an award winning recipe when combined with a limoncello buttercream centre)).
