How can I explain being made redundant?

As I'm going for customer success and retention roles, how can I explain that I still did a great job, and losing accounts and income (which ultimately lead to the redundancy) had nothing to do with me? Which it really didn't, the product was terrible and we were not delivering at all what we promised in the SLA / SOW, but I know that saying anything negative about a previous employer is a total no-no.

Redundancy is where your role no longer exists, is that what happened? If so, stating that the business chose to focus on another product/ area is more than sufficient.

'due to a downturn in business a number of positions were made redundant, mine being one of those'

Terribleluck · 24/11/2021 11:32

Yes, the job was in all honesty redundant even before I was hired. I was only there for 6 months, which doesn't really help me.

You shouldn't need to. Employers should understand how redundancy works. I have been made redundant before and its not been an obstacle for me during interviews.

Don't be negative about your previous employer even if you feel justifiably agrieved, and its perfectly normal to feel that way especially if you did your part well. Just say the company went through a difficult stage and unfortunately they had to make redundancies to keep afloat. Say that you really enjoyed your role and it was sad that you weren't able to progress further, but that you gained a lot of experience in your role that you would like to pursue further and are looking for more stability and security, in your next role

Redundancy is shit and it can to a real number n your confidence, but you have to remember that redundancy is due to outside failings and nothing to do with you, you were just really unlucky. Good luck.

And I was the only one made redundant, not that it necessarily makes any difference. I like the idea of changing their priorities to a different product, in a way that's partially what happened (or the cause of why the other clients were left to fetch for themselves).

Actually that helps you more. You were the one that drew the short straw, last in first out and all that. It sucks but makes your position more understandable.

Is the company still operating?

Terribleluck · 24/11/2021 11:43

Yes, they're still operating. I just checked, and they're nowhere close to release the white elephant, ans have moved away from clear pricing to POA.

Agree with this - "The company realised issues with the product they were selling and due to the downturn this created they needed to make a number of roles redundant. As I'd been there less than two years I was a free redundancy to them."

You could then go on to say that you'd not received any negative feedback, but it was a case of easiest route to reduce costs for the company.

CorrBlimeyGG · 24/11/2021 12:11

You're massively overthinking this. The more you try to elaborate, the more it sounds like you were dismissed for non redundancy reasons.

Terribleluck · 24/11/2021 12:23

I know I am @Corr but I almost feel like "I was made redundant" and not say anything else sounds almost incomplete. But definitely today while explaining how awesome I was for me thinking that it sounded like almost a contradiction.
