Toddler keeps trapping fingers in car door handle

My 18 month old doesn’t much like the car (whole other story) and has recently started to try to open the back door from the inside as we are moving.

Thankfully we have child locks on so she’s unable to get the door open, but she has been able to trap her fingers under the spring mechanism of the handle which causes her pain and involves me needing to stop to free her. I’m finding this very stressful and distracting and it’s putting me off driving anywhere where I can’t pull up and stop immediately. Any ideas on how to stop her - she keeps doing it repeatedly although it ends up hurting her. The handle looks like this:

Mittens? Give her something to do to distract her.
Sit her in the middle? I know not all car seats go in the middle
She’s little to reason with yet, I get why you’re finding it frustrating

The trouble with toys is that she drops them almost immediately. Any recommendations for a table or toys that hook onto the chair? She’s a bit old for the usual clip on Lamaze baby toys now. Mittens might work or soften the pinch - we’ll give that a go. Sadly we don’t have isofix in the middle and her chair is massive (it’s one of the joie 360 swivel ones).

My little boy does the same thing but hasnt trapped his fingers yet. As we only open it from the outside as child lock is on could you put some black tape across the handle so she cant pull it?

Duct tape should do the trick.

OhGiveUp · 24/11/2021 11:20

I was just about to say tape, but I was beaten to it.

MonkeyPuddle · 24/11/2021 11:21

Duct tape. Fixes everything.

I was just going to say duct tape! Alternatively stick a cardboard or fabric flap over the handle so she can’t get her hands on the handle. A side from a cereal box may be big enough, and it won’t be for long because the little darling will move on to something else irritating soon enough!

JamAutistically · 24/11/2021 11:27

I'd tape the handle whenever you're going out.

Also keep telling her to stop doing it (because it's dangerous/will hurt) and taking her hands away from it each time.

Duct tape should do the trick.

My ds loves doing things like this as well so we duct tape everything. He tries it a few times and gives up in the end when he fails.

DontPeeInThePlayHouse · 24/11/2021 11:44

Another vite for duct tape, child or handle. Your choice. Grin

Is moving the seat to the middle an option?

ArachnidArachnid · 24/11/2021 12:06

Agree, stick something over it and give her some different stickers to play with so she doesn’t start peeling it off right away!

careerchangeperhaps · 24/11/2021 12:29

Just watch her like a hawk if she ever travels in someone else's car. DD had a similar fascination with handles which was fine in our car as we had child locks on. Unfortunately Grandma's car didn't and we had a hairy moment when she opened the door mid-journey. She was younger than your DD so too young to really understand not to touch etc.

idontlikealdi · 24/11/2021 12:44

Take and she'll soon learn if it hurts her.
