Apple Watch for young teenager

I'd like to get my son an Apple Watch for his combined birthday/Christmas present. He is going to be 13.

He has an old SE iPhone 1st generation (bought 2nd hand).

I'm weighing up buying him a new 3rd generation watch S3/2018. Or whether to buy a reconditioned newer model from CEX.

Wanting to make sure that they are compatible for a bit yet - thinking of iOS updates etc.

What is the best bet?

DD's school has a ban on Smartwatches so we stayed away from it, a bit pointless if they can't wear it all day.

I would check the school's rules about it first.

I've now checked it out & he would be ok to wear one to school.
