Dd is reading a series of books aloud in her tutor group at school. She seems to be enjoying them and can tell me the storyline but not the title etc. It’s driving me mad!

It’s about two teen brothers who live with their dad. The mum has gone to Canada (?) and the older boy has learning difficulties so the younger looks after him. They find a badger sett and some other boys are trying to kill the badgers. There’s a dog called Tina who they rescue when injured and a baby badger that they take home that is called Snuffy. The older boy tells some friends about the rescue animals and they visit but then then the next day the shed is robbed and the animals gone. They find the nasty boys with the badger tied to a stick and the dog on a lead trying to harm more badgers. Somehow the police get involved and the animals are saved, the dog goes to live with the boy.

This is book 1 of a series, I would love to find them! Need a gift idea for dd for Christmas and it’s unusual for her to tell me so much about a book now! Thank you.

I don't know the name of the series but the author is Anthony McGowan. Books are Rook, Pike, Brook and Lark. Maybe not in that order. They are superb.

They are amazing and at times heart breaking books. I believe the series is called The Truth of Things.

Other books my teen ds enjoyed that had a similar feel
A Kestrel for a Knave by Barry Hines
Holes by Louis Sachar
A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness
Orbiting Jupiter by Gary D. Schmidt
The Skylark's war by Hilary McKay
The Outsiders by S E Hinton

As a PP says, Holes by Louis Sachar is also an incredible book.

Thank you all, that’s fantastic. I told dd the names this morning and she said that was it, she just loves those sorts of stories. She’s always preferred animals to people! Will definitely look up some of the suggestions, much appreciated.
