There's probably loads but, tonight, these two come to mind:

Are 'Friends' Electric? by Tubeway Army
Music by John Miles

Both for no other reason than they are absolute classics.

Good topic! I'm old so love 10cc, Genesis, Led Zep etc, but I reckon Johnny B Goode by Chuck Berry. A perfect 2 1/2 minute pop song

Libertaire · 22/11/2021 19:04

Merry Xmas Everybody by Slade, written by Noddy Holder & Jim Lea.

The song is estimated to generate £500k in royalties every year, and is likely to continue to do so for many decades to come. Not a bad pension for those guys…

What a great thread! I'd never have chosen Are Friends Electric but now you mention it - it's brilliant.

Days by Ray Davis. I think it's a perfect song.

Also Rainy Night in Soho - The Pogues, Picture This - Blondie and America - Paul Simon.

PainterInPeril · 22/11/2021 19:11

Because Of You by Kelly Clarkson. I feel as though she wrote from my heart as well hers.

squashyhat · 22/11/2021 20:03

Bumping because I'm nosy about other people's choices

Innatenvi · 22/11/2021 21:23

Anything with an epic guitar solo. Or Crazy by Aerosmith - it's just so, well, crazy and cool.

Riverlee · 22/11/2021 21:34

The Living Years - Mike and the mechanics,

Has beautiful lyrics.

Sn0tnose · 22/11/2021 21:40

All I want for Christmas is You, Merry Christmas Everybody, White Christmas etc, all for royalty related reasons.

35andThriving · 23/11/2021 13:39

Sitting on the Dock of the Bay - Otis Redding
Your Song - Elton John
Our House - Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young

peachescariad · 23/11/2021 13:57

First time Ever I Saw Your Face - Roberta Flack

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 23/11/2021 14:56

Hallelujah. The lyrics send shivers down my spine.

1forAll74 · 23/11/2021 17:43

Some of the early Beatles songs, like Yesterday, , Long and Winding road, and Fool on the Hill etc.

A different corner by George Michael

MichelleScarn · 23/11/2021 17:48

Happy Birthday 🤑🤑 cach-ing!

PermanentTemporary · 23/11/2021 17:57

Shaking All Over by Johnny Kidd and the Pirates (written by the singer). I think it's incredibly underrated and was years ahead of its time.

No Particular Place to Go by Chuck Berry. Just one of the coolest songs ever.

Cloudbusting by Kate Bush. Because it's half insane, incredibly personal and musically amazing.

White Lines by Grandmaster Flash and Melle Mel. It's so ramshackle compared to tracks now, and so passionate.

One I would have wished to write and no longer do; Blue Monday. I don't think it's lasted. Love Will Tear US Apart though sounds as good as it ever did.

Anything by Lennon McCartney

WildRosie · 24/11/2021 11:59

There's a number of instrumentals and television themes I'd also like to have written, e.g. World In Action, News At Ten, Coronation Street, Crossroads, Superstars and so on. The likes of Johnny Pearson and Tony Hatch came up with some corking tunes. Conversely, I'm mighty pleased I'm not responsible for the Minder theme song. The lyrics are contrived and the piano is out of tune!

KirstenBlest · 24/11/2021 12:24

I like the Minder theme
