I’ve started decluttering and now I regret EVERYTHING!

Four crates of DVDs/blu-rays decluttered. Yay!

Now I have to put them in the loft (I know I’ll want to watch them again at some point). Urgh.

Also, I’ve cleared loads of bookcase space so can probably ditch a couple of bookcases. Yay!

But now I have to put the bookcases into the garage. And paint the wall behind them.

Send me some strength?

Please?

What I have on DVD or even VHS is mine and not subject to the whims of streaming services - so I keep the stuff and even add to it. They will last my remaining lifetime.
Books on paper (I buy second hand) are independent of file / data providers and work even without electricity.
And decluttering to potentially rebuy does not seem to be the best of ideas, too.

SusieSusieSoo · 22/11/2021 18:27

Also if you go in an older lodge at Center parcs you only get a DVD player...I never take friends DVD's to Center parcs obv but I just moved my full box set to a new place in the loft today..., the rest are in those wallet cases that Ds used to call a dvd suitcase when we watched Peppa Pig DVD's

Paranoidandroidmarvin · 22/11/2021 18:46

I’m sat here horrified that u got rid of books!!!I could never be so brave

DockOTheBay · 22/11/2021 18:51

I would sell at least some of the DVDs on music magpie and get some extra money back. Realistically if you fancy watching a film you won't go up in the loft to dig one out, you'll just watch whatever is available. Maybe keep 10 or so if they're ones you really love and will actually watch over and over

Also get rid of the bookcases or they'll just be in the way in the garage until eventually in 5 years time you realise they're all mouldy and have to be chucked out.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 22/11/2021 18:59

The bookcases are only going into the garage until they can go to the skip. One of them was really old and the back had snapped off. No one’s going to want them.

The DVDs we’re keeping are old ones. BTVS and similar. Stuff I might want to binge watch again. And I don’t particularly want to repurchase things, I’m trying to be less of a consumer.

I’m not sliding into hoarder territory, do not worry.

Anyway, I’ve done it!

Will paint the wall on Wednesday once I’ve finished work.

I'm doing a similar thing, but I am slowly re-reading and re-watching books/DVDs and ruthlessly deciding if I will ever want to read/watch them again - if not, out they go!

CottonSock · 22/11/2021 19:05

The new BBC programme has inspired me a bit. Love your life I think its called.

Iamthemaid · 22/11/2021 19:06

Get rid of the dvds!!!

slashlover · 22/11/2021 19:07

Anyone getting rid of DVDs please call the charity shop first. We're not taking CDs/DVDs and I know lots of others aren't because we're overrun.

Moonmelodies · 22/11/2021 19:12

With so many films not available on streaming services, you might want to hang on to your DVDs.

TillyTopper · 22/11/2021 19:13

As PP have said you are shuffling stuff around, you are not decluttering!

35andThriving · 22/11/2021 19:17

I just re-locate stuff too. You are not alone, op!

godmum56 · 22/11/2021 19:29

you are not decluttering if it doesn't leave the house

MeetMeAtOurSpot · 22/11/2021 19:49

@BusterGonad

Agreed, you're not decluttering just recluttering (the atic and garage).
^This.

Get rid.

Gruffalogrinch · 22/11/2021 19:52

@whatwasIgoingtosay

Put some nice ornaments on your freed-up bookcases and don't worry about clutter. Marie Kondo is hugely over-rated. (But I agree about getting rid of the dvds).
I completely disagree. And don’t encourage the OP by suggesting ornaments! What is the point of decluttering if she replaces cds and dvds with ornaments?
Bagadverts · 22/11/2021 20:01

I disagree that you must get rid of everything- not everything on DVD will go on streaming. I also like owning the copy, Netflix or other company can withdraw the programme.
ATM for example I’d love to watch Jeeves and Wooster an old series, not streaming any where.

Cherrysoup · 22/11/2021 20:03

I emptied two cupboards of tapes/tape cases, the holders etc yesterday. Most proud! Plus 2 entire shelves of ancient magazines. I’m amazed mum let me, she is convinced all of them were worth money.

MyAnacondaMight · 22/11/2021 20:16

You’re not going to watch those dvds again.

HarrisMcCoo · 22/11/2021 20:42

All my DVDs and CDs are up the loft too. Looking to get rid of majority but will hold on to ten of each. Whatever are my favourites.. as someone else has said some series you just can't locate on streaming services.

Hemingwayscats · 22/11/2021 20:54

As everyone else has said, you aren’t actually decluttering here. Ditch the bookcases and DVDs, you’re never going to use them.

Fuuuuuckit · 22/11/2021 21:23

I'm a bugger for shuffling stuff around the house.

Today though, is D-day. I've just had my lounge recarpeted, and the only things that have gone back in there are useful, have a place and I love.

For the rest -
Took photos of all the 'get rid' stuff
Post it on our local fb giveaway page - all but one thing has been collected
Charity shop bag - dropped off after lunch
Big tip run - very cathartic

Tomorrow, the dining room. Ikea bags at the ready for charity, fb giveaway and tip.

amicissimma · 22/11/2021 21:26

I'm with you, OP.

I had a declutter. Now I've had to go and rebuy a couple of items I sent to the charity shop and now find I need!

cormorantes · 22/11/2021 21:28

Ge

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 22/11/2021 21:31

Presuming that BTVS is Buffy, Buffy is streaming on All 4 and will always probably be on one of the services.

Gingernaut · 22/11/2021 21:32

Moving stuff around without actually getting rid if it is called churning
