Yes of course, it’s still a car isn’t it?

BarryTheKestrel · 21/11/2021 21:40

Under normal circumstances, yes. If a vehicle has seat belts, use them for your own and everyone else's safety.

However if I'm in a taxi alone and feel nervy of the driver for whatever reason, I won't. In my mind it's another thing to impede a get away if I need it.

XenoBitch · 21/11/2021 21:43

Of course! If you don't wear a seatbelt, you become a missile if the car crashes.
I could not imagine not wearing a seat belt in a black cab... you would be chucked about all-over the place otherwise!

xyzandabc · 21/11/2021 21:43

Why would you not? Even if the law said you don't have to. NB. I have no idea what the actual law says, but just because they are a cabbie, they do not have any magical powers to keep you safe in a crash any more than anyone else, if you are not wearing a seatbelt

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 21/11/2021 21:44

Black cab no- private hire taxi yes

AntiCornLawLeague · 21/11/2021 21:44

I think passengers do, but the driver doesn't? Think it's a security thing, if they need to exit the car quickly.

Eeiliethya · 21/11/2021 21:44

Depends on if you fancy head butting the windscreen/back of chair/another passenger in a collision and causing serious injury.

Helpstopthepain · 21/11/2021 21:45

Yes, it’s a car.

RumJerrySailorRum · 21/11/2021 22:13

Is he getting mixed up with the fact drivers don't need to wear them??

Kids don't have to be in a child seat though in a taxi (unless they've changed that recently).

MarmitesMyMate · 21/11/2021 23:09

Yes but think the drivers don't? May be wrong tho

dementedpixie · 21/11/2021 23:11

www.gov.uk/seat-belts-law/when-you-dont-need-to-wear-a-seat-belt

Looks like the taxi driver doesn't need to but you do

Itsalmostanaccessory · 21/11/2021 23:15

Is there a reason for your hueband to have such a ridiculous notion?
Does he not believe in car accidents? Does he not understands what happens to ab unsecured, heavy object when a car is stopped suddenly in a crash? Or is does he just not care?

Errrrrr..taxi in collision. Maybe hit from rear. Would he rather be safe or fly through front windscreen or hit thd partition or from seats at high speed???!????

Kinsters · 22/11/2021 00:28

Private hire vehicle I always would, black cab I don't bother.

cayennepepper · 22/11/2021 01:14

Black cab I don't either since London is all 20mph. Of course this is a poor excuse but I always forget and I use the black cab as hop on hop off Confused

BertieBotts · 22/11/2021 01:52

He's probably confused because nobody ever does on TV for some reason. Like on come dine with me etc or those documentaries where people go to meet their long lost families.

Maybe it used to be legal not to? I would have thought one of those situations of it being legal not to wear one, but still stupid not to wear one.

It's possibly due to the responsibility issue. In a normal car age 14 is the cut off. For children up to 13, if caught with no seatbelt it's the driver who would be fined. For passengers of 14 and over the passenger themselves would be fined. I know this is generally why children are exempt from using car seats in taxis, along with the practicality aspect.

BarbaraofSeville · 22/11/2021 05:52

I don't understand why anyone would not want to wear a seatbelt or look for loopholes that allow it.

It's second nature to put it on so I don't understand how people 'forget' either.

Bagelsandbrie · 22/11/2021 06:22

Yes and everyone should.

purplesequins · 22/11/2021 06:28

you might be legally allowed to not wear one in a taxi, but it's pretty unwise not to in a motor vehicle.

millenialblush · 22/11/2021 06:35

If its there why wouldn't you? Have never understood why people opt out of wearing a seat belt.
