Anyone else working over Christmas

God my off-duty today and am working Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Christmas Eve, long days 7-7. My kids are going to their Dads so to be honest i am quite relieved I wont be sat at home alone at Christmas.

Anyone else on the Christmas working train?

Did you have a chance to choose your shifts or were you just allocated them?
Where I work people choose the shifts they’d rather work and the manager looks at the requests and tries to give people what they’ve requested taking in to account what they worked last year if applicable.

Allocated them. Since the 11th November and the mandatory vaccination we are so short staffed we are struggling to keep the staffing levels at a safe level, and Christmas is super busy for us with respite beds all full.

yep will be working christmas eve and boxing day due to colleague going to a wedding on 23rd ironically last year i would have been off all three if we hadnt been closed due to shutdown

FunnyCradock · 21/11/2021 19:51

Xmas eve (early shift), Boxing Day, 27th & 29th
all 07.30-20.00
Tbh I’d rather work Xmas day (early shift) & then have Boxing Day off because I won’t be able to relax properly on Christmas Day as I have to be up early the next day. Oh well, nurses gotta nurse

DaphneDeloresMoorhead · 21/11/2021 19:54

Yup, nights on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, the end of my 6 day set of shifts.

Layoverlife · 21/11/2021 19:54

I’m working everything but so are a lot of my favourite colleagues so I sort of don’t mind
(Paramedic)

Damnyoureyes · 21/11/2021 19:59

A nurse here…AND…

I’m off!!! HALLELUJAH!!
I’ve not had to argue, barter, bargain or beg!
It’s a bloody Christmas miracle!

New job means I don’t work bank holidays anymore so I’m off!

I do bench shifts though so will be working nights probably New Year’s Eve etc on icu.

Can’t tell you what a great feeling it is to not have the anxiety of it hanging over me since I had my kids around having time off at Christmas.

DontKeepTheFaith · 21/11/2021 19:59

Working Christmas Eve and I think Boxing Day, can’t quite remember and I did the rota😳

I worked all day Christmas Day last year so off this one.

I’ve been nursing for 20 years so am used to it now. Have been offered a 9-5 post to start early next year though so this might be the end.

Working Christmas is always a bit shit, I hope you have peaceful shifts and have time with your children at some point 💐

dalmatianmad · 21/11/2021 23:27

I'm off this year! We get to request what we'd like to work and our Matron looks at what you worked last year. I've got 5 days off which is amazing and completely unexpected. We're going away.

I'm working nights over New year which is always good fun being in ED.

PopularPlanet · 21/11/2021 23:34

Working in the afternoon and back home 24 hours later. Complicated unexplainable leave system to anybody not in the industry. I'm only working 5/6 days in December during the run up then I have leave from 28th until 8th Jan. Going abroad.
People at work have started asking 'are you working Christmas' if yes it's 'oh that's shit' or if it's a no the conversation stops there. No one is interested in anyone else's rota. It does make me laugh that once all leave and days off opportunities have been exhausted Christmas working still comes as a surprise to some.

I do get 25/26th off guaranteed next year though.

Madmog · 22/11/2021 08:19

I'm working Boxing Day. DH is one of eight and they all have to be on call two days over Xmas week/New Year. Work haven't even asked if they can/can't do certain days yet. Have to admit I've told him to refuse Xmas Day as he was only one on call when he did it a couple of years ago, so he's done his share for another year or so.

OnFormbySands · 22/11/2021 08:25

Yes, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day nights.

Albern · 22/11/2021 16:46

Yep I'm working Christmas day and boxing day but I have the bank holiday monday and Tuesday off so I'm happy 🎄🎄
