What could be in my attic?

My dds (young teens) woke up an hour ago to loud noises in the attic above their room. I went in and listened. We've had mice in the past but this sounds much bigger. Please don't say it's a rat. (It's probably a rat).
They came to sleep in my room but we couldn't settle.
My DH is away with work for the first time since the pandemic started. Before that he was away regularly for weeks at a time and I was fine with it.
Now I'm feeling rattled. Dds and I have decamped to the living room. They are dozing but I'm on edge.

Put flour down to see where the footprints come in?

Don't do that! You'll attract flour weevils. 😱
And whilst they don't stamp about in your attic, they do whisper and whistle a lot.

I think.

We had bats. They are protected apparently, but they did go with the help of peppermint oil from Amazon. I put it all over the house and attic on cotton wool. They hate the smell. Packed their bags and went in a day. Sealed the gap where they went in. They were so loud when the house was silent at night.

U could get a cage trap and tempt the creature in. Peanuts for squirrels apparently.

Whatever u do, DO NOT put poison out (bitter rat experience), the creature would die and stink in the house for months. And the cats might get poisoned in the process :(

Best to get pest control people in.

How did you get on last night Thunderface?

Thunderface · 22/11/2021 18:29

All quiet last night, thanks.
Hopefully whatever got in, got out the same way and stays out.

Another vote for no poison. We had a rat die in the space under our front porch. The smell in our basement was horrendous. And then came the apocalyptic plague of big black flies. Hundreds of them.

You need to go and watch Luther and then burn your house down!

thereisonlyoneofme · 22/11/2021 19:00

Could be birds, we used to have ones wearing hob nailed boots, and they were only starlings!
