Objectively, no I’m not “impressed” at all

BUT

I’m positive that if my daughter did it I would think “impressive” (and remarkable and very special too)

But objectively - no

They really vary at that age. DD1 (left handed like me) was early with mark making and I have a mothers day card that she wrote in at 3y2m (I was also very early and very good at art, I got an A grade in my Higher). She drew and drew and drew at that age, still spends a lot of time doing painting now at 14. DD2 (right handed) was later and less enthusiastic but within the normal range and DS did not pick up a pencil at all until he was nearly 4 (thankfully he's an autumn baby so was nearly 5 by the time he started school so it wasn't an issue), he is probably ambidextrous (he eventually settled on writing left handed at school but often picks up a racket in his right hand) which may have had an impact. He's 9 now and loves drawing.

@TeenMinusTests

6 at least

Good control
Good comparative sizing
Details of fingers (sort of)

Yes, the 'correct' proportions struck me. No way a 3 year old drew that because they usually do large bodies and long spidery legs. It looks very much like an adult has drawn it attempting to make it look like it was drawn by a child.

The play dough art looks very much like an "average' very young child did it. The painting is very good but the play dough is not at all exceptional. As a parent, I would think it was cute and good but in no way exceptional.

MerryMarigold · 20/11/2021 13:51

I think this is good for 3 nearly 4 year old. I work with 2 - 4yo. Very average for a 4.5+

readwhatiactuallysay · 20/11/2021 13:53

I feel you really are trying to get everyone to say she's exceptional though 🤔
It's fine to come on and be really proud of your child's drawing, it is nice and everyone would have agreed and been happy for your enthusiasm. I think its a lovely picture irrespective of her age, i would be proud she loves her sister and wants to draw them holding hands.

But to try and say this wasnt posted as a hope people would guess much older so you could show how exceptional she is a very transparent.

I think for a nearly 4 year old its quite good. My son is 4.5 and if asked could do that, if left to his own devices, he would scribble a bit of a house or mummy and daddy and start doing something else, hes not interested in it at all, so its great shes good at something she enjoys and puts her time into.

Behind ALL posts like this are parents secretly wanting to be told their child is exceptional.
cultkid · 20/11/2021 13:55

5 nearly 6

riotlady · 20/11/2021 13:56

I think that’s great for a 3yo! My DD is 3.5 and very much still in the “potatoes with arms and legs” stage

Eeiliethya · 20/11/2021 14:06

I think it's brilliant for a 3 year old, mine is nearly 5 and this is similar to what she can draw.

I don't know why people need to poop on your parade, it's a good drawing Smile

JohnDee007 · 20/11/2021 14:06

I’m 45 and it’s better that what I would do so very good for 3 I would say. But everything a child produces in joy is amazing

Rno3gfr · 20/11/2021 14:09

I would say 5.

Everyone is saying 3? My son tuns 3 next month and he’s still just drawing lines and random circles Confused

Chichichiwawa · 20/11/2021 14:11

Ah bless. Doesn't every parent think their kids scribbles are amazing? Not all of them post them on Mumsnet though Grin

PieMistee · 20/11/2021 14:11

I've worked in nurserys and that would be the top end of the drawing scale, not exceptional but above average.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 20/11/2021 14:11

OP you really need to put down some newspapers or a wipeable tablecloth! However lovely her artwork is, you still don't want green paint in your wooden table...

Sprostongreen21 · 20/11/2021 14:15

I’ve worked with children for 20 plus years. I’ve seen children at 2 drawing like that I’ve also children of 5/6 so similar too, everyone develops different skills at different ages.

@Letsallscreamatthesistene

This is MN, so 4months?

I don't think she's a child genius, but I do think it's lovely that you do.

Everyone wants a mum who believes in them. It's great your DD has you as her cheerleader.

Agreed.

CherryRedDMs · 20/11/2021 14:19

I watched a 3 year old (not mine) draw a 3D house in perspective with windows at a birthday party this morning. So I would guess OP’s daughter is perhaps above average but not exceptional.

knittingaddict · 20/11/2021 14:19

4/5.

Loving some of the other answers though. 4 months? Art college? Grin

Have you had children not follow the typical stages of drawing? Just curious as DS started more with outlines, for example he drew a recognisable cat curled up at two and a half, one line showing the head shape with ears, around for the body and tail then added eyes. He never did the heads with legs or similar. Wondering how common this is?

All of this. Our family in general was way at the back of the queue when artistic talent was being handed out (at least the kind needing fine motor skills - ds2 is a mean photographer) so I'm always impressed by good drawing in young children. But I always wonder what posts like this hope to achieve and why it matters that a child is 'ahead' of others of his/her age.
