Can someone answer a quick question for re finance / renovations

We need to get some work done on our house and will need to remortgage to do this. Do we need to contact bank first to see how much they can lend us to talk to builders to get quotes to see what things will cost? It's probably very obvious but genuinely have no idea.

I would get several quotes first. Then at least you have a figure. Then apply to the bank. If you apply to the bank first, you may be offered less than a builder can do the work.
