Bloody Amazon and Visa

From 2022 Amazon will no longer accept payment from U.K. registered Visa cards due to the cost. They will accept a visa debit, but I’m not doing that due to the lack of protection.

Bye bye Amazon. Not more ££ from me.

I’m the same I always buy with my visa, I spend a lot with them so guess I will be saving quite a bit from now on.

PingedPotato · 17/11/2021 09:36

Fair enough. They've obviously decided their business model. You're welcome to go elsewhere.

PlatinumBrunette · 17/11/2021 09:41

Visa have had the monopoly of debit and credit cards in the UK for years.
Plus, there is apparently some sort of security/fraud risk with them because First Direct unilaterally cancelled all visa debit cards this year and issued a MasterCard instead.
In the ‘old days’ we could choose visa or MasterCard. Hopefully this option will return now.

Sounds Brexit related to me. It kicks in from 19 January 2022. Amazon's refund and returns policy is good. They'll lose me as a business customer though as my corporate card won't be accepted.

Bramshott · 17/11/2021 09:44

I got this email and assumed it was a scam! Sounded so unbelievable...

Cookingbynumbers · 17/11/2021 09:46

I imagine the bods at visa are now going to negotiate a new rate with Amazon, as the size of the market they stand to lose will be massive if it goes ahead. Amazon have played them.
So I’m leaving all my payments with visa in place for now. If it gets near to the deadline with no agreement then I will switch to Mastercard.
I’m fortunate that I do have access to both.

SoupDragon · 17/11/2021 10:18

Sounds Brexit related to me

How?

SprayedWithDettol · 17/11/2021 10:32

I’m not going to take out a new credit card just to use Amazon. It’s madness. I will miss amazon prime for the TV.

It's credit cards, they still take Visa debit cards. So most/many people will be unaffected.

ColinTheKoala · 17/11/2021 10:37

I thought this too at first, but the rules around credit card charges are actually EU rules that the UK implemented and hasn't got rid of, so it's not.
Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 17/11/2021 10:41

I wondered if it was a scam! We pay on credit card for the protection and also because it means we don't need to check what's in the current account first. I don't spend all that much with Amazon, but will be looking for other suppliers as this is inconvenient. I hope this isn't the first of many businesses walking away from Visa credit cards, though. Shock

2020isnotbehaving · 17/11/2021 10:43

Is this because visa charges Amazon per transaction ? I guess Amazon will be pushing their own credit card. I don’t often use credit card on Amazon but I do for large buys for extra cover it offers when things go wrong.

TurnUpTurnip · 17/11/2021 10:46

Gosh I don’t even have a credit card, i use visa debit, never had a problem!

MiloAndEddie · 17/11/2021 10:52

I also wondered if it was a scam!

Can you use PayPal on Amazon? I assume you can get round it by linking your Visa to your PayPal and paying that way?

onlychildhamster · 17/11/2021 10:55

I actually don't spend much on Amazon but I need it to buy kindle books (fully switched to e books) and hamster food/toys/bedding. I have Barclaycard, what is a good MasterCard credit card?

yoshiblue · 17/11/2021 12:12

@onlychildhamster I have a Tesco mastercard which I also collect points on and Amex (again collecting cashback paid annually)

MLMshouldbeillegal · 17/11/2021 12:15

@PingedPotato

Exactly this. Up to them what payment methods they will accept. If you don't like it, there are lots of other businesses out there who would be delighted to accept your visa credit card.
Neighneigh · 17/11/2021 12:17

I agree with @Cookingbynumbers - give it a few weeks and lo and behold it'll be announced that visa and amazon have reached a deal. It's just willy waving.

CointreauVersial · 17/11/2021 12:19

I have to say, at first I thought it was a scam, as it seemed so unlikely, but apparently it's true. Obviously Visa's charges didn't suit Amazon, and they've decided to play hardball.

Personally it won't affect me, as my credit card is Mastercard, but I use Amazon all the time for work, and the company card is Visa, so that's going to be a bit annoying.

Silverswirl · 17/11/2021 12:20

Probably just a game of chicken. No way in the world will visa want to be dropped by Amazon.
Why though do you need so much protection when buying from Amazon? I’ve found it one of the most safe places to buy from?

notapizzaeater · 17/11/2021 12:20

I reckon Amazon are doing it to get the charges down - I would imagine people at visa are worried by this.

VanCleefArpels · 17/11/2021 12:23

I smell a bluff being called here

Visa cannot possibly afford to lose the wields biggest retailer.

However something is up with visa because Santander debit cards are now MasterCard - they wouldn’t do this for no reason

Chakraleaf · 17/11/2021 12:24

I only have a debit card, I didn't know this was something I should worry about?

MrsFin · 17/11/2021 12:30

They have decided to stop using VISA. I have not.
My CC is linked to my current account and it's paid in full each month, so I simply benefit from S75 protection on all on and offline purchases.
The odd book or DVD I can buy elsewhere. It's probably a good thing in a way.
At least I won't be paying for Jeffs enormous space knob next time he launches it. 😂😂
