Bloody Amazon and Visa

From 2022 Amazon will no longer accept payment from U.K. registered Visa cards due to the cost. They will accept a visa debit, but I’m not doing that due to the lack of protection.

Bye bye Amazon. Not more ££ from me.

It is Brexit related. There are fee caps that apply in the EU which no longer apply in the UK and VISA are therefore putting their fees up in the UK.

Bobsyer · 17/11/2021 14:35

@SprayedWithDettol

I’m not going to take out a new credit card just to use Amazon. It’s madness. I will miss amazon prime for the TV.
Cutting off your nose to spite your face springs to mind….

What are you buying so often that requires the back up a credit card offers? I’ve literally never had to invoke the clause Confused

@Chakraleaf no your debit card is fine.

Chipsahoy · 17/11/2021 16:21

I wouldn’t use a debit card online ever due to fraud. It’s nothing to do with the extra protection on purchases. Someone uses my credit card not a huge deal. Someone empties my bank account, massive deal.

So I wont shop at Amazon with my debit. I only have visa credit card.
Only think I’d really miss is the kindle unlimited.

Yes I've now seen this. I hadn't realised the UK government had already done away with the fee caps but it makes sense!
Aderyn21 · 17/11/2021 16:41

I use a credit card to protect me from fraud. Saw this on the news today - Amazon and Visa and going eyeball to eyeball and hoping the other blinks. I don’t care, I’ve got a Mastercard and don’t owe either Amazon or Visa my loyalty.
If it gets hard for people to use visa on Amazon, they’ll probably just shop elsewhere. Some business will emerge to plug the gap.

TurquoiseDragon · 17/11/2021 16:55

My NatWest card is Mastercard. Natwest debit cards are currently Visa, but I've had a letter to say they are changing over to Mastercard.

PrincessNutNuts · 18/11/2021 00:10

@SoupDragon

Sounds Brexit related to me

How?

We get another notch more Brexit in January.

With the EU cap on interchange fees no longer applying in the UK from January 2022 Visa plans to increase its fees. In response Amazon plans to stop accepting Visa.

nocoolnamesleft · 18/11/2021 00:21

That's annoying. Only have a visa credit card. And love my kindle - otherwise Amazon could do one.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 18/11/2021 00:22

Surely not?!

We pay everything on our cards and pay off at the end of the month. Oh well! Ffs.

arcof · 18/11/2021 00:26

I'm sure they'll resolve the issue before then

YodaiamsaidI · 18/11/2021 00:41

Worth doing if you have a Mastercard as you should have received an email that will give you £20 promotional discount once you've changed your card details.ive just done it and received the £20 off.

I'm a total Amex convert. We got the all singing all dancing one and it's brilliant, especially for travelling. They have great spot offers with places we actually shop at too. We can also use our card points to pay for Amex purchases.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 18/11/2021 07:52

Not relevant to Amazon, but I would always pay for a big ticket item like a holiday or a sofa with a credit card, as if the supplier goes bust you have recourse to the credit card provider to get your money back. I assume this hasn't changed in recent years. Legislation putting this in place was passed decades ago, IIRC.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 18/11/2021 07:53

(This protection is not in place if you pay with cash, cheque, credit transfer or debit card. Not sure about charge card. It's the credit bit that gives you the protection, for some reason.)

KaptainKaveman · 18/11/2021 07:56

@notapizzaeater

I reckon Amazon are doing it to get the charges down - I would imagine people at visa are worried by this.
Yep, agreed. Visa have dominated for CC market for years. Not any more, it looks like!
HalzTangz · 18/11/2021 08:02

@ColinTheKoala

It's credit cards, they still take Visa debit cards. So most/many people will be unaffected.
They take credit cards still just not visa.

Prime etc can be paid by direct debit so that shouldn't affect customers who use prime for their subscription services.

eBay sell everything Amazon does for the same price (often cheaper) from the same suppliers. People can shop there or at any other online retailer. Amazon isn't the only retailer

Canigooutyet · 18/11/2021 08:16

Sign up with revolut. They do virtual cards for one time purchases.
Some banks also offer purchase protection on products over something like £100 you just need to read their policies.

FlorenceWintle · 18/11/2021 08:20

Negotiating tactic by Amazon. They’ll do a U-turn with weeks, if not days. Don’t give it any more thought, it won’t happen!

Gladioli23 · 18/11/2021 08:22

S75 doesn't apply under £100 does it? I so rarely spend £100 on Amazon that it wouldn't make much difference to use a credit card. I do have one I use if I spend more than that but it wouldn't impact most of my purchasing.

Beamur · 18/11/2021 08:27

I suspect that a deal will be struck but have emailed my bank in the meantime to ask if they offer MasterCard as well..if lots of places start refusing visa banks may shift to other providers too

This. It really frustrates me that I haven’t seen any mention of it in the press (I completely concede I may have missed it though)

I was a remainer, but completely accepted the outcome of the referendum and I’m glad it was respected - but I do think people should be aware of what the implications of that process have been.

Dinosaurwoman · 18/11/2021 08:42

Yep, definitely BREXIT related. Fees are going up now we’ve left the EU.

Roselilly36 · 18/11/2021 09:03

@Neighneigh

I agree with *@Cookingbynumbers* - give it a few weeks and lo and behold it'll be announced that visa and amazon have reached a deal. It's just willy waving.
Yep, storm in a teacup.
PrincessNutNuts · 18/11/2021 09:28

Does anybody know if there's any reason why these new Brexit costs would only affect Amazon?

Presumably Visa aren't only raising their credit card charges for one company?

And presumably all credit card companies could do the same when the EU cap on such charges is removed due to Brexit on January 19th.
