Mice - please calm me down

I think I have mice. It’s odd as house is very clean and no access to food. Also major building work was done recently so you would think it would have scared them away. But I heard some squeaking. These are old terrace houses so mice may have moved to neighbours house and now come back…

But I am really terrified of them. Please reassure me they will not be running over me as I sleep….

Have you seen any droppings?

Hellocatshome · 16/11/2021 22:45

They won't run over you as you sleep they will be too busy eating your food in the kitchen. Have you checked inside the kitchen cupboards for droppings or chewed packaging that is usually the first sign. I've had mice in the house a few times and haven't yet heard one actually squeak.

Notcontent · 16/11/2021 22:46

No, I have not seen any droppings but heard squeaking in the ceiling! Urgh….

Have you got some essential oil? If you are wanting to go to bed now and want to feel confident of being a human mice repellant, spray yourself with strong perfume and douse your bed linen and room with essential oils, the more fragrant the better.

Mice hate perfume, and most particularly they loathe peppermint oil.

Tomorrow, get some wire wool and fill every gap you can find between skirting and floor.

Rats ?

Taoneusa · 16/11/2021 22:48

Sleep highly perfumed, and tomorrow get the loft sorted!

FindingMeno · 16/11/2021 22:48

I've had mice and rats and never heard a squeak.
If you can't see droppings, don't worry.
They shit all over the place and if you got to the point of having them run over you in your sleep, you'd see droppings.

Hellocatshome · 16/11/2021 22:49

In the ceiling? In the upstairs ceiling? Could be bats.

Sunshine4you · 16/11/2021 22:51

You need to get one of those plug ins that radiates sounds that only mice can hear. My mum used them successfully in her house if you want I'll ask her for the name of them.

Notcontent · 16/11/2021 23:07

Thanks. I don’t really have any large gaps anywhere except maybe where there are pipes under the sink. Will look into getting those sealed.

We get them in the roof (very old house) I have never heard them squeak.
As pp said, could be bats?

Notcontent · 16/11/2021 23:21

Oh dear - now I am going to start thinking it’s rats…. Definitely not bats as I am in central London and also there is no loft immediately above this area.

Ghosts?

NeedsCharging · 16/11/2021 23:31

Growing up our House backed on to farmers fields so mice were common...think sat on the sofa watching Casualty and seeing a mouse run across the room and up the curtain!

We got a male cat ( not "done") and the mice disappeared overnight.

Also before any food is prepared or cooked my mum wipes down every surface and everything in her cupboards is in a tin or tuppaware. Nothing in chewable packets.

Mybalconyiscracking · 16/11/2021 23:33

You don’t hear squeaking, you hear movement and find droppings and things that have been nibbled. Was it windy when you heard the squeaking, maybe it was something moving in the wind and rubbing against something else.
I honestly think you jumped to rodents as a conclusion far too early!

SkiingIsHeaven · 16/11/2021 23:46

Have you seen how small they are?

They will be terrified of you.

Stop worrying. What will they do?

How will they harm you?
