I'm having an Xray on Friday, I've never had one before!

What can I expect? Do I have to strip off or what? When do I get told the results? Is it normally straight away or will I have to make an appointment to see a doctor about it?

Hiya, it depends where you need your x-ray if you have to strip off. They won't tell you at the time, but they will soon after. Are you pregnant? X

I had my wrist x rayed recently and it took 4 weeks before I had any results.

Kanaloa · 16/11/2021 22:00

It all really depends. I’ve had x-rays in a gown so without stripping off. The results depends on what you’re being x-rayed for - of course with a broken bone you’ll hear back almost immediately after whereas if it’s something else you can wait some time.

I had an x-ray in the middle of lockdown, got results the same day.

Kanaloa · 16/11/2021 22:01

But there’s nothing really to expect. It’s not a big deal, usually it’s very quick and easy - not like an mri or cat scan where it can be a kerfuffle and uncomfortable sometimes.

Kikkomam · 16/11/2021 22:01

Yes it will take about 3 minutes. Nothing to get excited about sadly!

Helenahandkart · 16/11/2021 22:20

I had a chest x-ray recently and was fully dressed for the whole thing. One proviso is that you’re not wearing any metal (bra hooks/underwires, zips, safety pins, poppas etc). It took a couple of minutes.

What are you having x rayed? I've had 2 but one was of my throat as I had food stuck in it and the other was my foot when I fell, so not covered anyway. I've not thought about if it can see through your clothes lol.
I have had a barium swallow, where they get you to drink a white liquid and x ray your gullet and I kept my clothes on for that Grin

Thelnebriati · 16/11/2021 22:31

I've had loads! They'll need to put you into the right position to get the image, which can be painful if its something like a frozen shoulder. They ask if there's any chance you could be pregnant, and if the camera is aimed at your abdomen they'll use a lead sheet to cover your ovaries. Then they go behind a screen while they take the image.

If its a digital machine they might be able to see the image straight away, but they usually won't interpret what they see or try to tell you the result. You'll have to wait for the consultant to write to you.
I usually ask if I can see it because its interesting to see your own insides.

Depends who ordered it. Dh results went to gp as they had arranged it. Took a couple of weeks. They can X-ray through clothing but ideally no metal.

Eaumyword · 16/11/2021 22:55

It's definitely a blink and you miss it procedure. I had a pelvis/hip x ray a couple of weeks ago and kept my trousers and top on.
I had one 2yrs ago and had to get gowned up for that one!
Nothing to worry about at all.

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 17/11/2021 08:01

Thanks all Smile it's a pelvic Xray, ordered by my GP. Trying to find the cause of this terrible lower back pain I keep getting.
