Do you ever chat to your friends on the phone? As in actually TALK?

Hi,

I was just thinking the other day, I never talk to my friends on the phone. Only ever message on WhatsApp, FB etc. We do our proper catching up in person, but I would never pick up the phone just for a 'natter'.

I think the only person I do this with is my mum.

I suspect this is just generational, as I know that if I randomly called any of my friends, they'd wonder what was wrong with me Grin which when you think about it, is really quite strange 🤔

I'm mid 30's, just for reference.

What about you?..

Very, very rarely, with maybe two good, old friends who live far, far away.

Lyricallie · 16/11/2021 09:58

Yea, I'm late 20s quite often phone my friends for a chat/rant and they call me. Especially when I'm walking home and it's a bit dark. Also I call my sister fairly often just to check in just because we don't get to see each other very often and she's mid 20s.

SnowSurprise · 16/11/2021 10:06

Once or twice a year, on birthdays. Can't meet in person as we live in different countries.

TokyoSushi · 16/11/2021 10:08

Only if there's a drama!

TheYearOfSmallThings · 16/11/2021 10:09

Only the ones who live in other countries, and also one friend who has so much chat she gets tired trying to tap it in.

TeeBee · 16/11/2021 10:12

Nah. Don't like small talk. I speak on the phone as little as possible.

Spud13 · 16/11/2021 10:19

Daily-weekly! My friends are very important. Xx

BogRollBOGOF · 16/11/2021 10:19

No, I don't phone for chats, except for my mum.

I find phonecalls hard work as my auditory processing isn't great so it takes a lot of conversation.

Text messages and emails were the shiny cool ways to communicate when I hit adulthood.

BoozyHotChocolate · 16/11/2021 10:20

@TokyoSushi, yes, same! This is what I mean by my friends would wonder what was wrong if I did call and vice versa. We would automatically assume something must be wrong.

So strange, because as a child, young teen, I would spend hours on the phone to my friends!

My friends text all the time - but I do try and call once in a while for a proper chat

Sparklingbrook · 16/11/2021 10:26

Yes, all the time.
A lot during lockdown when meeting up wasn't possible, but even now, I'll call friends or they'll call me for a chat about what's going on in our lives.

JadeTrinket · 16/11/2021 10:30

All the time. Many of my friends are scattered around the world, and we talk on the phone a lot.

MajorNeville · 16/11/2021 10:30

I was about to say the only person I ever chat to on the phone with is my mum but I also chat to an aunt every few months too. No friends, gosh the very thought makes me uncomfortable.

furbabymama87 · 16/11/2021 10:31

I had a friend I would chat to for hours on the phone but we've lost touch. All my other friends just text. I think it's a combination of me being busy with the kids and my friends busy with work and other commitments.

GingerFoxInAT0phat · 16/11/2021 10:31

I have 3 friends who I will phone, or they do me. One of them nearly every day whilst she drives home from work and I walk the dog. The other two maybe once a week or so.

I also speak to my sister on the phone maybe once a month.

We also use messenger but only really for sending photos and quick messages.

Oh my dad rings me quite often, usually when he’s driving a long distance to pass the time.

Doomscrolling · 16/11/2021 10:34

No, we WhatsApp and arrange to get together to chat in person. If there’s one thing Lockdown made plain to me it’s the value of getting together face to face.

Sparklingbrook · 16/11/2021 10:35

Texting is ok, but if it's going to be a long text conversation it's just easier to have an actual phone conversation.

doodleygirl · 16/11/2021 10:35

Yes, couldn’t imagine not. How can you have a proper belly laugh or cry over a message? It’s just not the same. I also don’t think you are really in the moment with that other person unless you are actually talking to them.

I think messaging has its place but nothing beats actually talking to someone.

LindaEllen · 16/11/2021 10:46

The only time I ever phone anyone for a chat is my grandparents, and that's only because it takes them 7-10 working days to figure out how to respond to texts. I'm not a phone person.

Sparklingbrook · 16/11/2021 10:52

I feel the next generation have some sort of weird attitude towards using a telephone to actually talk on.
I'm forever telling the DC (adult) to 'just ring them' when they're moaning about not being able to sort something out. They will do anything to avoid it. Confused

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 16/11/2021 10:55

Some friends I do and and others I don't.

I speak to at least one member of my family on the phone most days though.

AuntieMarys · 16/11/2021 10:57

I don't phone anyone apart from my adult children who live 250 miles away.

MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry · 16/11/2021 10:59

Just with one friend who is my closest. We call each other a couple of times a week to catch up. I love those calls.

Howshouldibehave · 16/11/2021 11:04

Never and I’m more than happy with that-I’ve always hated the phone.

I’d much rather text or FaceTime.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 16/11/2021 11:05

Yup!
Only with my closest friends but we'll natter on the phone for hours
