The utter joy of 'finishing' a household item...

I'm not a scrooge, lol! But I totally enjoy using up 'stuff'. Today was a hat trick: filled the washing up liquid bottle with hot water and used it to do the dishes (new bottle in the cupboard), snipped the top of my moisturiser (enough in the tube for a few more days!), took the crusts left from the loaf of bread to dunk in my soup at work. Anyone else get a thrill out of an empty container?

I do use up everything. Shampoo I don't like becomes hand-wash, I snip the ends off tubes and hot water to get the last out of jars.

But I just feel like I have too much stuff, so the next step is to buy less of it going forward, so I don't feel I need to use it!

I cut up tubes to get the dregs and tip half used jars and bottles into eachother. My biggest achievement in life so far has been finishing a roll of cling film instead of it getting abused and wound round itself and binned. I've done it a few times now and got some funny looks when I told people how proud I was!

I use up shampoo/body wash for cleaning the bath and sinks too. No worries about it getting on your skin either! I bought pump bottles off eBay to decant some shower gel I didn't like and use as hand wash instead

All these, and stationery too. I love to fill up a notebook. And finish a pencil right down to a stub-in-a-biro cap too short to sharpen.

Jubilate · 16/11/2021 00:05

My eldest and I are the dream team with colouring pencils. I sharpen them. She uses them a lot. We bin them when I can get a grip of the end in the pencil sharpener and we both get very excited.

I take scrunched up paper packaging and opened gift wrap. Lay it straight, smooth it down. Then fold it to take up as little space as possible. Into the paper recycling bin it goes.

This is my favourite part of opening Christmas presents. Gives me peace and joy.

I use newspaper and printed materials to line the food caddy. For the side that faces me, I choose a lovely picture, maybe it is a vibrant coloured ad or a landscape photograph. For the bottom of the food caddy, I choose the face of someone I dislike, maybe Megan or Jeremy Clarkson. It gives me great joy.

I like to start on the new one before finishing the old one, so that when the old one is gone I've already started on the new, I do it with washing machine liquid.
Noo!! How can you do that! 😂

Peach01 · 16/11/2021 00:22

I love this. I love using up things I don't really like the most. I hate waste and clutter so it's a right sense of achievement. Things like body wash and moisturiser from gift sets that I'm not keen on are the best because they're not just going to get replaced with another.
I have a few hair products that have been opened a bit too long so working my way through them just now.

VincaMinor · 16/11/2021 00:33

Yes! It feels like an achievement Grin

Today making a sandwich I finished off a primula tube ,last piece of ham and mayonnaise bottle..marvellous!😉

gaggiagirl · 16/11/2021 00:56

Ooh I too finished off a primula tube! On the same day I also finished a bottle of Ribena and a bottle of sauce. Lovely.

Slight tangent but I tend to repurpose things rather than throw them out.

That bath soap that turned out to be a bit of a disappointment? Wash my hands with it.

Leggings that are, ahem, coming apart at the seams. Chop them into dusting cloths.

That old top that I suddenly realised looks scruffy? Pyjama, gym, dog walking tshirt, or save in a growing pile of things I plan to dye a different colour.

BookFiend4Life · 16/11/2021 02:26

I think this is kind of an asmr thing? I like using up food from tupperware, and also perfectly sizing leftovers to tupperware (hate it when there's lots of empty space).

Bloodybridget · 16/11/2021 02:43

Yes! We were sent a huge bottle of washing up liquid in a supermarket delivery, in place of the ordinary size we'd ordered, some time last year. I've refilled the normal size bottle three times and it's finally getting low; can't wait to finish it!

StartupRepair · 16/11/2021 03:01

Agree with all these sources of satisfaction. I have a beautiful large bottle of very expensive shower gel that I won in a raffle. It is in a drawer unopened while I work my way through a soap bar I bought at a market last year. Weird how I look forward to making the transition but won't do it early!

IncorrigibleTitmouse · 16/11/2021 03:37

Me! I finished a massive bottle of shower gel today and now I can get a posh one I'd been looking forward to out! Love it.

You're all fabulous people.

What is asmr please?

PussyCatEatingPigsInBlankets · 16/11/2021 07:50

@cloudtree

The best thing is when you can get rid of the end of a product by tipping it into the new bottle. Then you can dispose of the first bottle before it was ready!
I did this yesterday with fabric conditioner, fairy liquid and liquid soap.

The treble! Xmas Grin

SisyphusDad · 16/11/2021 08:14

Yessss!

My favourite is the tubes of tomato puree. The pleasure I get when I use a rolling pin to squeeze out every last bit Grin.

@StealthPolarBear I'm with you. I get really cross when I can't open cardboard packaging in such a way that it's undamaged (I'm looking at you M&S, with your welded - shut pizza packaging) so that I can fold it perfectly flat.

middleager · 16/11/2021 08:58

This is me! Reminds me to search for the Beauty Hoarders Thread.

Some months ago I started the Curly Girl Method and went crazy buying different hair products.

Now, as I pledge to cut down plastic waste and also satisfy my need for bare minimums of items, I am willing those bottles to end. I've given some away, repurposed some, but dream of getting to the end. I don't know what I was thinking. I hate having excess items and I can't bear waste.

So simple, yet I never thought of a rolling pin. I've so much to learn still!

confusedofengland · 16/11/2021 09:27

You are totally my people! I love to use things to the absolute death Grin

  • Halloween pumpkins - carved them, displayed them, roasted the seeds, made soup with the flesh (even carving ones taste fine) & put the shells in the woods (in trees) for wildlife
  • Fruit & veg that is starting to turn- cut off any bad bits then freeze for an eventual crumble/cake/soup
  • Kids' clothes go through my 3 boys (often from older cousins first) then get turned into dusters once worn through. Don't think I've bought cleaning cloths in years Grin
  • Every bottle or tube gets snipped/rinsed out before going in recycling. Pots, like the one my curl creme for my hair comes in, get rinsed out & used to store screws etc in the garage.
Clevs · 16/11/2021 09:34

Completely unplanned but my washing machine, dishwasher and tumble dryer all finished at the same time this morning. I didn't know which beep to respond to first 😂
