The utter joy of 'finishing' a household item...

I'm not a scrooge, lol! But I totally enjoy using up 'stuff'. Today was a hat trick: filled the washing up liquid bottle with hot water and used it to do the dishes (new bottle in the cupboard), snipped the top of my moisturiser (enough in the tube for a few more days!), took the crusts left from the loaf of bread to dunk in my soup at work. Anyone else get a thrill out of an empty container?

I don't like tipping old things into new, though. I like to fully finish the old first.

BordelDeMerde · 15/11/2021 21:36

Ooh, I'm your opposites, sort-of!

A few years ago, I bought a n
deodorant and the smell of it was a bit manky for some reason. Imagine my joy when, about halfway through the can, I realised I was a grown-up and didn't have to continue to use the horrible deodorant until it was all gone - I could just throw it out and buy a new one! Grin

Since then, I have successfully managed to persuade myself to throw out various other things I wasn't enjoying, rather than just hanging on to them because there was still some left. The liberation! GrinGrinGrin

I am also a fan of this, or giving it to someone else who might use it. I don't make my life miserable using bad productsGrin

Cut the bottom off my garlic paste tube there was loads left. I had the last squeeze of the toilet cleaner (that I hated) today it was joyous I

dorothygaleandtoto · 15/11/2021 21:48

I always cut containers like moisturiser and conditioner in half so that I can scoop out what's left inside when they're 'empty'. I'm currently working on a snipped moisturiser which was 'empty' nine days ago!

Chunkymenrock · 15/11/2021 21:51

Ooh yes! I love it! 3 bottles all went at once in the shower last week! I love a fridge version too. Using up the last few tomatoes/end of the milk/finish bag of carrots etc...

Whycantibetangy · 15/11/2021 21:52

Alas, I feel I shall never share in your joy. I have 2 teens who are utterly incapable of resisting the lure of the ‘new bottle’

Shampoo, toothpaste, chocolate spread, cereal… nothing is safe, they open stuff willy. Illy and leave me with the dregs of whatever is left Hmm

I have taken to hiding my refills in the boot of the car Grin

Glenmarnoch · 15/11/2021 21:54

The best is the empty space in the fridge when the strawberries, grapes and blueberries get finished. All the plastic does make me a bit sad though Sad

DukeofEarlGrey · 15/11/2021 22:00

Haha, yes! I used up a bubble bath tonight... triumph.

IWanderedLonely · 15/11/2021 22:01

How about lipstick? Takes me months to use up once it's got to the lowest it will wind out to. Use an old eyeshadow applicator minus the sponge.
I'm not tight, honestGrin

StealthPolarBear · 15/11/2021 22:05

I feel like this about cardboard recycling. I store it uo for months, trying to cram it all into one box by making each bit as flat as possible. Then i throw it all into my boot and get rid od it when next at the supermarket. That day or so before it starts building up again, i feel like a queen.

Potatolatkes · 15/11/2021 22:05

@Bananalanacake

I like to start on the new one before finishing the old one, so that when the old one is gone I've already started on the new, I do it with washing machine liquid.
What?! You like this?! In our house it seems to happen by carelessness but it drives me bonkers. Currently 2 butters and 2 soft cheeses open in the fridge and several toothpastes open in the bathroom 😫

What can you possibly like about this?

FelicityBeedle · 15/11/2021 22:08

I was down to my last soap sliver last night, DP had ran out of shower gel and accidentally snapped it! I was heartbroken, I love using it until it’s practically translucent

uncomfortablydumb53 · 15/11/2021 22:11

Just today I cut my shampoo bottle in half! There's enough for two more washes

Sparklingbrook · 15/11/2021 22:15

Oh dear, I am an awful person. I have around three different shampoos and conditioners on the go at any one time, and bar soaps.
I alternate between them all each day. Is there no hope for me?

Every family member prefers a different toothpaste too so there's between 3 and 4 tubes out. Grin

AllTheCakes · 15/11/2021 22:16

Love this too. At the end of a bottle I get quite generous with the amounts I use just to use up the last bits sooner. I hate near empty bottles hanging around and I’m keen to start on the new one.

CommanderBurnham · 15/11/2021 22:18

I love doing this! I love the empties thread on S&B but have applied it to the rest of my possessions: clothes, pantry, stationery, shoes, bags, birthday cards - basically not repurchasing until I absolutely have to.

For me, I've found the biggest enablers of my giant stashes are 1. My husband 2.Offers 3.endless scrolling on the internet that makes me want stuff which I then go on and buy. Unsubscribing from emails saves a lot of impulse purchases.

When I do repurchase, it's always with something nicer and something that I've been wanting for a long while.

Some of my 'stashes' are going to take years to get rid of. I have about 10 years worth of eyeliner and about 20 more pairs of knickers and socks than I need for example.

I love taking things to the charity shop, but this has decreased since I stopped purchasing so much. Also the headspace that gets freed up is amazing.

I totally hear you OP, love an empty.

StealthPolarBear · 15/11/2021 22:21

Ill tell you what else givea me thrills. If im ever stayong overnight with work i take a shampoo that's almost finished and a small sliver of soap. Then i use them up and throw them out and i dont have to bring them back. They're not heavy or bulky, no idea why this pleases me so much.

DramaLlllama · 15/11/2021 22:21

I’ve found my people! I often want to divorce DH when he has 3 cans of spray deodorant on the go at once…just wrong!!

Love finishing a bottle of something. So satisfying!

Shewholovedthethebanhills · 15/11/2021 22:35

@StealthPolarBear I love that too! It feels like such a huge victory. I’m just not sure what I think I’ve defeated.

Mrsjayy · 15/11/2021 22:36

My eldest used to do this opened bloody everything just to "try " now she won't let her Bf open a new shower gel 😂

choppolata · 15/11/2021 22:47

Today I finished a dental floss that had a best before of 2014 (how does dental floss ever go off?) Happy times!

imasurvivor2 · 15/11/2021 22:53

I just took 3 inside packs of half full Dorset cereals that DH likes and put them in one cardboard outer and chucked the other 2 cardboard packs in the recycling so there's more space in the cupboard. A minor victory which gave me much satisfaction earlier this evening! Grin

IncyWincyGrownUp · 15/11/2021 22:59

I’ve decided I only buy hair conditioner in a pot now, as it means it all gets used before being put to the recycling.

I have teens though, so regularly cull the contents of the bathroom f things they’ve bought to try, then forgotten about. If I never see a ‘new’ type of shower gel they’re discovered again…

This is my favourite quote of the day! And I am the same - taking ends or miniatures away and then not bringing anything back with you... winning on multiple levels.
