Xmas present idea for autistic boy

Hi, my employer does a secret Santa for disadvantaged children in care. This year I've picked an 11 year old boy with autism who has asked for something "sensory".

There is a lot out there on the market but I'm struggling with his age - do any of you clever Mumsnetters have any ideas?

How much is the budget?

A popit is a good sensory toy.

HairyScaryMonster · 15/11/2021 19:53

Perhaps post this in the SEN section? I'm thinking lava lamp but if they want something touchable then look up fiddle toys.

CatFacePoodle · 15/11/2021 19:53

How about something like a Rubiks Cube or a Rubiks Twist? Good for fiddling with, my autistic son plays with them a lot.

Poppits are very popular

Infinity cube

Fidget spinners

Special putty

Pumpkinstace · 15/11/2021 19:57

3d pen?

chiefcha · 15/11/2021 20:04

I have a 10yo on the autism pathway who loves fidget toys. They're popular atm for children without SEN too. What's the budget?

x2boys · 15/11/2021 20:04

My eleven year old has severe autism ,he likes things like blu tac ,wool, string ,water toys ,honestly I could spend a fortune ,but he would be delighted with blu tac, a ball of wool bubble wrap etc ,lots of little pound shop things , like giant bubbles ,small balls etc etc

Gilead · 15/11/2021 20:48

Autistic Dd loved her rubiks cube, stayed with her through school and uni.

thisisnotagooduseofmytime · 15/11/2021 20:56

It's very true that everyone is different! My DS isn't really bothered about a lot of these but is very comforted by cuddling his soft toys and being in his hoody blanket thing.

wejammin · 15/11/2021 21:01

My autistic son is nearly 10, he's a sensory seeker, he loves 'brain putty', also those cushions with flippy sequins, stretchy bands, wobble cushions, one of those pin things where you press your hand or face in it and it makes the shape on the other side, Rubik's cubes. It will depend on his sensory profile, and your budget.

wejammin · 15/11/2021 21:04

I've had some good things from here before www.cheapdisabilityaids.co.uk/sensory-toys-and-sensory-lighting-1-c.asp

BoobsOnTheMoon · 15/11/2021 21:09

I have an autistic 11 yr old boy Grin and these are the sort of sensory things he enjoys...

Kinetic sand
Aromatherapy dough
Glow sticks (especially in the bath!)
Exciting bath bombs (especially combined with glow sticks!)
Flip sequin cushions or clothing

x2boys · 15/11/2021 21:25

Is there a particular autistic child in mind?
I'm only asking because a lot of toys marked as sensory are quite expensive ,and tbh my child wouldn't be interested in a lot of things B&M and pound shop type places do lots of little fiddly type things that are cheap and my child would love ,one thing he did like was Gelli Baff which was a sachet thing we put in the bath and made a jelly substance ,we added another sachet to wash it away

percypig84 · 15/11/2021 22:20

It depends on your budget but my 10 year old with ASD has got some things he loves from this website (the lady who runs it is local to us)!

I have a 14 year old ASD DS but quite young for age, he loves big soft toys and all things fluffy or fleecy. Things like teddy bear fleece range from Dunelm. Also loves animals. Basically a lot of presents more you would think of for a 5 year old year girl, they often follow him around admiring his bunny and duck collections.

BlackeyedSusan · 15/11/2021 22:39

second cushion with flipping sequins. both mine love them.

bluetac and elastic bands...

Stompythedinosaur · 16/11/2021 01:35

I'd get kinetic sand, possibly an infinity cube.

Dollygirl2008 · 16/11/2021 07:07

Sorry my wifi went down

Thanks for all the ideas! The budget is between £20 and £30 so I'd really like to get him something lovely!

And I know nothing about him as it's a
Obviously secret for safeguarding
