Terror alert - trip to London

Has the recent news made you anxious about going to big cities? I'm due to go to London the end of this week and I feel uneasy about it, I cant decide if to go.

OP posts:
WheelieBinPrincess · 16/11/2021 11:48

@Noavocado where are you getting this from? Can you link?

It was said he wasn’t on an MI6 radar it watch list at all.

Even if he was, that’s potentially information the general public wouldn’t be privy to.

Comefromaway · 16/11/2021 11:49

There have been interviews with the people he used to lodge with and a comment from the Cathedral. It's one hell of a back story to make up.

Peddling false information to try and rile up hatred for refugees is apalling.

Noavocado · 16/11/2021 11:54

And yes I am on a bit of a rant and upset. You may or. May not have figured from my posts that I have Muslim heritage.
So I know why these people hate the UK and USA. I do not want to make you suffer but many do.
They hate the English. In my town England was a swear word between men.
I do not think you realise the hatred that is going to bestoe this country.

londonmummy1966 · 16/11/2021 11:56

I'm always a bit bemused by people who get anxious about this sort of things. However, if it makes you nervous then think about what aspects of the day are the most "risky" in your mind and how to mitigate them. For example if you are worried about the tube get a taxi or walk. If you are worried about crowded places then avoid theatres/cinemas/big department stores. If you are in town to shop then look for the areas with smaller independent shops rather than Oxford Street etc.

If after all that you still feel anxious perhaps you should stay at home.

Ontopofthesunset · 16/11/2021 11:56

Coming back to the OP's point, as speculating on the recent bomber's origins doesn't answer her question at all, there have been bombs and terrorist attacks in this country pretty much all my life. I've lived in London for 50 of my 55 years, commuting for many of them, and I've never been involved in a terrorist attack. Neither have any of my extended family or friends who also live in London.

The chance of it happening to you or your child is incredibly small. You can't calculate the risk because there are so many unknowns. Obviously you know that statistically you're far more likely to be involved in a road traffic accident than a terrorist event. Terrorist attacks seem avoidable and perhaps more frightening because they are so random, but then all accidents are random and avoidable (if you didn't go to London, if you didn't get in the car, if you stopped for petrol at the previous service station...)

stilldumdedumming · 16/11/2021 12:00

I'm on my way to Liverpool right now. If anything it'll be safer now than before. Does that help at all? To think it like that? It's safer after an attack as security is more vigilant.

Comefromaway · 16/11/2021 12:01

Exactly ontopof. I mean back in the early 90's you had the tragedy in Warrington. Who would have thought a small north western town would be such a target? The chances are so small we have to live our iives.

AuntieMarys · 16/11/2021 12:03

You sound deranged noavocado.

Gonnagetgoing · 16/11/2021 12:06

No I don’t feel anxious. Terror attacks can happen anywhere and I’ve worked near where the London ones have been and the Streatham one was very near me. Even the last London Bridge attack we were at a restaurant but it was a day or 2 before it happened. I mean if it happens near where you live or work then of course you get are entitled to be nervous and think afterwards lucky escape but it’s not like I’m not going to not go to London or another big city due to a terror attack.

Ariela · 16/11/2021 12:10

Wouldn't bother me in the slightest. No terrorist will do anything for at least a couple of weeks as they imagine everyone will be on high alert and looking for suspicious types skulking about with back packs.
They'll wait till there's a false sense of security, and people have things at the very back of their minds.

I worked throughout London when the IRA attacks were happening and the Iranian Embassy siege was on. One of my friends almost got splintered by glass from the Bishopsgate bombing. But none of us thought we'd be victims, London is such a big area and so many people live and work there. Anyone found a needle in a haystack or won the lottery? .

Ariela · 16/11/2021 12:12

PS a tip: don't walk about with your head glued to your phone. You're more likely to step off a pavement into danger

HopeMumsnet · 16/11/2021 12:20

Hi all,
We have made some deletions on this thread - some were merely repeating previously deleted posts.
We would ask posters to stick to verifiable facts about ongoing cases, thanks.

EdgeOfTheSky · 16/11/2021 12:22

@Noavocado

Why once again are posters making this about London? Manchester and Liverpool are not London. They will not be able to to target London again for some time. The middle class can rest easy... For now.
Er, because the OP’s thread is about her visit to….London. 180 Miles away from London.
Leftbutcameback · 16/11/2021 12:35

Nope, although I would be if I was driving on A roads. Especially country ones. Statically more dangerous than motorways. Luckily I'll be going by train to London. Worry about what is actually higher risk, not what makes the headlines.

Noavocado · 16/11/2021 12:37

@AuntieMarys you call me deranged for being a white Muslim with honest views that my parents countries hold. Thankyou.
You sound like a privileged ignorant twat.

Leftbutcameback · 16/11/2021 12:44

OP - k
The other thing which might help is to know what to do. So the BTP text number is 61016 for incidents (and 999 of course for emergencies before anyone jumps on me!). The guidance is run, hide, tell so if you see anything happening remember that. In Liverpool a worrying number of people were hanging around after the initial explosion.

Comefromaway · 16/11/2021 12:48

No, she's calling you deranged for constantly putting out false information about the bomber and using phrases that I shall not repeat as they have already been deleted.

Noavocado · 16/11/2021 12:50

Clearly on Mumsnet you are not allowed to state you are Muslim and give an account of the atrocities the UK has inflicted on other countries.

Noavocado · 16/11/2021 12:54

My information is not false. When it's in main stream media in a few days... Come back and call me deranged. If my info was that far off the mark I would have been banned from posting. I'm not.

WheelieBinPrincess · 16/11/2021 12:56

@Noavocado it’s fuck all to do with you being a Muslim. No one gives a shiny shit, it wasn’t at all something that could be deduced from your earlier, hate-monger it false statements.

You probably should be banned to be honest, because I’m not quite sure what your game is here.

DoubleShotEspresso · 16/11/2021 12:57

Born and bred Londoner here.... worked through all the IRA bombings and was running a nightclub streets away the night the Admiral Duncan bomb went off.
I am sorry to read some of the responses you received here OP, I do understand it's perhaps more than a consideration for those visiting London, but being perfectly honest it's not something we think about on a daily basis or we truly would go mad. It remains a fantastic city like no other, just be vigilant and sensible as you would visiting any other major city and enjoy what is here.

JesusIsAnyNameFree · 16/11/2021 12:58

@Noavocado

The amount of absolute shite spouted on here at times and you think people get banned for it😂 people don't even get banned for telling people not to go to a&e/call an ambulance when they're clearly very ill and in danger. Get a grip.
Comefromaway · 16/11/2021 13:00

You didn't state you were muslim until late on in the thread and your deletions were due to giving false background information about the bomber, not because you gave an account of terrorist incidents.

You are peddling conspiracy theories. If the bomber were still alive what you are posting would actually be illegal and could potentially damage a trial. I am not sure of the legal position with him being dead.

It is an unhinged conspiracy theory to say that the UK authorities have invented a name, and background of a person and come up with false witnesses who knew him in order to conceal the "truth".

What we don't know yet is if anyone else was involved. Unless you are part of the plot or work for the security services then you cannot possibly know that either.

Anycolourwilldo · 16/11/2021 13:04

I genuinely don't understand the terror threat alert. When terrorism takes place, does that trigger more terrorism to take place? Or are they isolated events? If so - the risk is exactly the same as before.
