Smoked Herring Help!

So I was drawn in by the lure of a yellow sticker at Tesco yesterday and came home with smoked herring (aka kippers) and I have no idea what I'm doing with them! I need to feed myself and DS7 for dinner, so it needs to be child friendly (though he is quite good with strong flavours, loves smoked mackerel etc). I've done some googling and have settled on kedgeree, partly because I already have some boiled eggs in the fridge, but I have no idea how to actually cook the fish as the recipes all just say to remove skin and flake the fish in, so are assuming the fish is already cooked.

Some sites seem to think I need to boil the fish to remove excess saltiness. Is this necessary/advisable? Or can I just give it a couple of minutes in the microwave?

Help please!!

I think if you bring a pan of water to the boil and remove it from the heat, then put in the kipper and leave for 5 minutes the kipper should be cooked. You can the remove the skin and flake the kipper for the kedgeree. Hope it works out!

Surely it's already cooked? That's what smoking does.
You just need to flake it and add it to your rice and whatever else is in your kedgeree. It'll be delish.

Honestly I don't really understand the differences myself, but smoked mackerel I'd definitely just eat and treat as already cooked, whereas smoked haddock is definitely raw and needs cooking.

Appearance wise the smoked herring was closer to the haddock and I wouldn't have wanted to eat it without cooking. I poached in the microwave in the end and apart from the millions of faffy tiny bones it was great and DS loved the dinner Grin
