What can your local MP do for you really?

Lots of people have suggested I contact my local MP with regards to previously fleeing domestic abuse and living with ongoing domestic abuse from my ex-partner.
Realistically, what can they do?

In general in depends on the mp. If you are writing to complain about lack of support or failings by police, social services, council etc then a "please explain" letter arriving on Westminster headed paper can set the heather ablaze.
If the MP has a social interest in tackling dv or women's issues (and the mp does not need to be a woman to support this) then you will hopefully get support Flowers

I’m sorry you’re experiencing abuse. Our local MP helped us but the circumstances are very different. The flat above us has multiple issues that are causing us problems. We were unable to complete our renovation and fix the issues as we had to wait for the council to sort the flat upstairs. They’ve been dragging their feet for almost a year now and trying to get them to do their jobs has been draining. We asked our MP for help and provided evidence in the form of emails and pictures of the damage. He wrote to them demanding an explanation and the council got back to us within days and we now have a clear timeline for the repairs upstairs meaning we can finally make our home nice again. I could have cried when we he agreed to write a letter on our behalf as we’ve been going back and forth with them for so long. So it’s a very different situation to yours but just wanted to show that they can sometimes help
