Do I need to keep getting smear tests when HPV negative?

I have had 2 smear tests previously, no change in partner over the years and both negative for HPV which is the only thing they test for when HPV negative.
Is there any point in me getting another done? Surely without a change of partner it will just continue to test negative and not have the cells checked for anything additional so be pointless?

HPV can lie dormant for years so it is important to continue to have smear tests.

I thought the point was that it can lie dormant; I had it after being with the same partner for several years despite an earlier one being negative and there was no suggestion that I should I be questioning my DP about cheating.

The NHS now only test for HPV and don’t look at the sample unless you test positive. You can do an at home self swab HPV test instead if you prefer - Superdrug online sell them for £48. However you to it, is still important to get tested regularly as it can lie dormant for years. If you want a proper smear where they actually look at the cells then you’ll need to go private.

While dormant, the virus is inactive; it won't be detected by testing and will not spread or cause any problems. However, the infection may then “re-emerge,” perhaps due to changes in the body's immune system. It is impossible to determine exactly when or from whom you acquired an HPV infection... So it is possible you might have an infection already, but might only test positive in the future
